Healthy Diet and Living; Monday, Period Five [ 07/06 ].

It was a bit odd, Daisy felt, having this class not first thing in the morning and in the middle of the week, but, despite it being the afternoon, she was still a little tired. It might have a little bit to do with the fact that last night was the only time she had to turn the home ec classroom into a veritable offering of goodies.

And there really was a bunch of food, the fruits of a marathon cooking session last night. Hopefully, it was all normal looking food that they would help themselves to easily without thinking too much on the actual subject of the class, since that sort of ruined the bit Daisy had planned for once class began.

True, it was exactly how she'd done it last time, too, but they were all new kids this time.

She gave them a little time to munch and chat or whatever before she came in in her conservative clothes, the ones she really only wore for plainclothes jobs before she did this whole teaching bit. "Good afternoon!" she greeted them brightly. If you haven't already, help yourself to all the snacks; there's plenty. My name is Daisy Day and hopefully you're all here for my class; if not, stick around anyway and eat some of the food. Most of you seem to be unfamiliar faces, so hopefully that means we'll get to know each other better over these next few weeks. Either way, some of you may know that I'm not normally teacher; I'm normally a police officer at the station, but while I'm here, I'm strictly Daisy. Or Miss Day if you're nasty."

"And now onto the point of all this: healthy eating and diet and living! A lot of people have the misconception that eating healthy means eating bland or gross or boring, but this course is to teach you that that is not the case at all. Everything you've been munching on? Healthy for you. And delicious. So, ha. Take that." She gave them all a grin, babbling because, okay, she might have been a little nervous. Still. Even after having done this last time. She knew she probably sounded like a total nerd. "Now, we'll cover different things each week, starting with breakfast, if you'll have a look at the syllabus. Today, we're just going to snack and get to know each other, and I'd also like to give you each one of these notebooks. These notebooks will be a food journal; keep track of everything you eat every day, and, every so often, we'll have a little look and see what we can do to make easy little healthier changes to your usual diet."

"So, anyway, introductions. If you don't mind, I'd like to know your name, a little about yourself, whatever you'd like to share, and then what some of your favourite foods are. It'll help if I know what you like, so I can work with that! So go on, go ahead. But don't talk with your mouth full."

"Hi, I'm Claire Butler. I'm a junior, was raised in Texas and hope to go out for the cheerleading squad here," Claire said when it was her turn. "As for my favorite foods, I like some good barbecue, ice cream and does chocolate milk count as a food?"

"Can't go wrong with chocolate," Claire said with a grin. "And I was a cheerleader at my old school, so it's just a matter of staying in shape."

"Eva Rodriguez from Boston, so as far as hometown foods, I like my baked beans, my chowder," She piled the accent on that word because she couldn't resist it. "...cream pie, cranberry bread, and the roast beef sandwiches. God, the roast beef sandwiches are up there."

She wasn't even mentioning all the Dominican food she loved.

"Mmhmm. And now that you've mentioned it, BBQ ribs are high up there too. I also eat white rice on a daily basis, but that's just my dad doesn't know how to make anything else besides rice, beans, and hot dogs." Eva explained.

"That's how I learned. Before she died, my mother would take me in the kitchen, have me help. It made the recipes and just the action of moving around the kitchen much easier to soak up." Eva said, instantly thinking about her mother and grandmother.

Now, Eva was good in the kitchen when it came to family recipes, but her mother and grandmother were geniuses.

He swallowed and wiped his mouth on a sleeve when he realized it was his turn to speak. "Hi, I'm Griff O'Conner. Huge fan of really different foods. I miss London and the ability to get a good curry. But I'm not all that picky about my food. Had a Swiss Cake Roll for dinner yesterday."

"But then, cooking would actually require me to make it..." This is where she lost him. "When I could so easily purchase it from the store."

"So this class is about cooking our way to healthy living rather than eating?" Griff saw an image of himself burning all his favorite puddings.

Her turn? Momoko set down the latest thumbprint cookie she was about to start and stood with a grin.

"Hi, Detective Constable! Nice to meet you again!" She saluted. "I'm Momoko Akatsutsumi, junior, from Tokyo City, Japan. I like all kinds of foods, but my favourite is octopus-shaped hotdogs with rice! Also cake, although I like all kinds of desserts, really. And I don't like celery."

Momoko tilted her head and chuckled. "Well, they don't start out that way. You have to cut up the hot dogs or sausages into the basic shape then fry them so that their tentacles curl up!" She spread her arms and curled them up, in imitation of curling tentacles.

"But they're really cute and tasty! Some people eat them with pasta, which is good too, but my mom used to make my bento with rice and that's what I learned how to make and it's the best way, really."

"I'm Jill McTeague. I'm a senior, I'm from Massachusetts, and, uh, there might be a guy, some week? That's...sort of me. Sorry about him. And my favorite food is French toast."

"Uh..." Like Jill paid attention to what Jack ate, when the boobs and sports thing was so much more mal. "I'm not sure."

"My name is Morgana," she started. "I am from Camelot, and my favorite food would probably be fresh fruit, although I must admit that being here has given me an affinity for chocolate."
