BWI - Portalocity Lounge [Friday Morning]

Chloe got off her flight from New York and followed the signs to the lounge. She dumped the duffle bag of clothes that Andrew had hastily purchased on the floor and slumped into one of the uncomfortable airport chairs.

She was still against this plan but she realized on the flight that sulking wouldn't make it any better so she was going to put on a brave face and make the most of it.

"Really?" Jean was far too cheerful about making people feel at home. ~~If they were pretty~~. "I went to school north of here before this."

She was cheerful, and Tara relaxed a little. At least this one is nice so far ~~and pretty~~. "I'm from a tiny little town in way northern California," she explained. "I've barely been out of the state."

Jean flushed a little, but it was a nice compliment. So she just went on as if nothing happened. "California? Really? I've always wanted to go out there."

Tara shook her head. "I'm not from anyplace cool. We don't even have a McDonalds."

She was becoming (slightly. so very slightly.) bolder as she added, "Where are you from? North, I mean."

"New York," Jean replied with a grin. "Small town too. But we did have a McDonalds."

"Well, then clearly you're way ahead of us," Tara said with a genuine smile. "Do you have a Wal-Mart? Only fancy places have those."

"One, If I remember correctly," Jean replied. "But it wasn't that fancy."

"You can buy clothes at Wal-Mart," Tara explained. "We always had to, uh, drive to buy anything." She smiled slightly. "D-do you know how big the island is?"

She hoped it'd be a little bigger than home -- not big enough to be scary, but big enough that she could buy herbs without making a lot of excuses to get into town or ordering them by mail.

Jean hesitated for a moment. "Not... really. I don't know much about the school, actually."

"Me either," Tara admitted. "The letter just said I had a scholarship if I wanted it, and .... I think my mom" wanted to get me away from my dad "figured it was better than having me around the house all summer."

Oh.

Jean smiled, a bit forced as she nodded. "My last school... has some construction work. So they sent me here."

Until they stopped worrying about their baby girl.

Tara noticed the forced smile, and wondered if she'd said something wrong.

"Oh. Are you happy to be someplace new?"

"Well." Jean sighed. "I miss my friends."

"I'm just going to miss my mom," Tara said softly. "W-we'll make new friends. Maybe. Right?"

She didn't even sound like she believed it.

"Right!" Because that sort of cheer was necessary. "It'll just be...new."
