Criminal Justice: Wednesday

There had been a *handwavy* notice for all the students to meet at the shooting range for class today. When the class arrived all the safety gear was laid out for them and several examples of fire arms were laid out on the table.

He also made sure the rules were posted and read off every one to the students. It was clear he was not going to tolerate any foolishness today.

SAFETY RULES:

· TREAT ALL GUNS AS IF THEY WERE LOADED

· KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL READY TO FIRE

· BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT’S BEYOND

· ALWAYS WEAR HEARING AND EYE PROTECTION

· NEVER USE ALCOHOL OR DRUGS BEFORE OR WHILE SHOOTING.

· CHECK IN ALL WEAPONS BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE RANGE.

"You violate any of those rules?" Gibbs said giving all the students a hairy eyeball, "Or even point a gun at something other than the target, so help me I'll smack you in the head and throw you in detention so fast it'll make your head spin."

"That being said, what we have here today is a .22 revolver, a 9mm automatic handgun and a sniper rifle. In law enforcement you use these weapons for self-defense or the defense of others. That is the only reason you should draw your gun in the field."

And if anyone from NCIS heard Gibbs say that they'd probably die laughing. Right up to the point where he'd smack their head.

"Now if it comes down between you and your opponent? That should be the only time you should shoot to kill. And when that happens, do not mess around with the target. Aim for the head or chest. Otherwise aim for a non critical part of the body. Knees. Shoulders. They may not walk or use their arms right again but it's better to send some people to jail where they can rot away than to give them the easy way out."

Gibbs then went through the process of loading each gun, firing them and unloading a gun for everyone to see. When this was all done he again read off all of the safety rules. Again.

"All right," he said now looking satisfied, "Let's see how good you all are with these."

Dinah's experience with Gun Club allowed her to be a decent if not excellent shot by now, although she realized she needed to practice more often.

Ben reached for the sniper rifle, took several deep breaths, and then bulls-eyed every target he aimed at, his expression icy and detached.

It was very clear he'd done this sort of thing before.

Guns. Well, Turtle reasoned, at least she knew she could do better with this than she'd done at fight club this week. She took up the more familiar handgun and took to her steady, even, and focused target practice, disliking how simple and easy it was for her now.

Right. Anemone knew how to do this. Her service-issued sidearm was still stuffed in the weapons locker somewhere, although she didn't remember exactly where. Conventional firearms were one of her least favorite weapons.

Still, shooting people was one of the things she did and did well, and you never unlearned skills like this.

Anemone very calmly and methodically worked through each of the firearms offered; inspect, load, fire. Reload. Second round. Disassemble, clean, reassemble, and return to storage.

Her accuracy with the .22 and 9mm were acceptable, but the little smile as she sighted down the sniper rifle and took aim was a bit disturbing.

She missed hunting.

Guns didn't kill Strigoi, but most guardians carried them anyway. Which meant that Rose had trained with them over the years. The handguns at least, the sniper rifle was totally new, and after trying the .22 and 9mm on a few distances to remind herself how they worked, she tried out the rifle. She really, really wasn't very good at that. Something about not holding still enough to aim.

Helen was actually a safe and excellent shot.

As far as class activities went, Jennifer didn't rate this highly. But she took it seriously, and tried her best... which wasn't that great, admittedly.

Zayne was trying out one of the handguns and - much to his surprise - discovered that he was nearly as good with one of these as he was with a blaster.

Not that he was good with a blaster.

But at least the holes he was making in the target were scattered in an interesting fashion.

Momoko chose a 9mm and took her position, not thinking about how easy it was to do so, now. Despite being a few weeks out of practice, Momoko was happy to see that she was able to hit the target at about her usual level - good but not at all consistent or lethal.

She grinned. She knew the point was to be able to be consistent and lethal, but she was still learning, so she was feeling pretty good!
