Spy Games, Monday, 6/15, Period 5

Class met in the Danger Shop today. It was set up as a shooting range, with a stocked weapons locker and safety equipment at one side and targets at the end of the room.

"Hi," Sarah said, completely at ease. "Today, we're taking about weapons. Spy weapons aren't going to be too different from any other kind of weapon, except that it's more important you conceal them easily on your person. If I was working, I would probably have a small revolver strapped at my ankle and a knife in the small of my back."

She was working. She had that and more. Her hair sticks? Not just decorative.

"Basically, if we're talking weapons, we're talking knives and guns. The main kinds of guns we'll be working with today are sniper rifles, for long-distance work, and pistols for short distances." She explained briefly how the guns were loaded and how they fired.

"I expect you to follow all NRA gun safety rules listed on your handout. The only field rule I'd add is, don't shoot if you aren't ready to kill. If you're shooting to wound or to scare someone off, you probably shouldn't have your gun out to start with. Firing a gun makes a big scene and, as a spy, that's the last thing you want. Right now, we're in the Danger Shop and it's programmed so that if you aim your gun at anybody, the gun turns into a badger."

Sarah frowned at that part of her notes, clearly thinking about it for the first time. "... I don't know why a badger. Still. Don't aim your gun at people."

Shaking that off, she continued, "The other weapon we're talking about is throwing knives. I'm a big fan of knives; they're small, they're light, they're easy to conceal, and if you're good you can use them in a crowd without anyone noticing." She demonstrated her throwing technique, easily making a few bullseyes from the end of her lane. "And of course there are safety rules with those, too. The knives have the same Danger Shop protection as the guns -- if you do anything stupid with a knife, it turns into a badger."

"I think that is everything. You have the rest of the class period to practice with the weapons. I'm here to give pointers. If anyone's uncomfortable with this session -- or drunk, high or otherwise impaired -- come see me and we'll work out an alternate assignment."

Ino was more doodling on her notebook than paying attention blah blah modern weaponry blah blah and more making a list of things they'd use in her world.

Karla looked around for Triela. She doubted the other girl would be concerned about 'getting better' with a firearm. Which hopefully meant that she'd be okay with giving Karla an early lesson.

Claire took notes. She was still kind of nervous around guns, given her limited experience with them was not being able to shoot Peter.

Katchoo . . . was saying nothing about the real reason she had a broad leather wristband around her left wrist. At all.

Throwing knives were new to her; Tambi and Samantha hadn't taught her anything about using those, and she'd never gotten around to learning anything about sniper rifles before she'd made a break for it. (That was what Tambi kept Becky the Gun Girl around for, anyway, not that Katchoo knew her.)

Effy wasn't really a weapons sort of girl, for all she had one of those bad-ass persona's. Never picked up a gun in her life.

That didn't mean she wasn't curious. Try anything once. She was even listening for this.

Ellie really wasn't the weapons type at all, so she was listening intently and taking notes.

Agnes raised her hand. "Umm... As a safety protocol, turning things into badgers is a really bad idea."

Alice was barely able to contain a happy wriggle. Knives. Guns. Aiming for the kill, and not the injury, and such information relayed as calmly as one might note the weather.

She was trying to take notes, but they were decidedly more towards the squee than might be properly Alice-like.

It was probably a good indication of how little Valentine felt about getting her hands bloody (metaphorically, of course) that she was more curious about the whole gun-turning-into-a-badger thing than about the guns themselves.

Liir was wondering if he could technically gain some sort of scout's badge for 'arming yourself without appearing armed'. He was reasonably sure, however, that lacking training in all of the weapons you'd tuck away would disqualify him.

Lois grabbed a gun and hit the range. It had been a while but she still was a decent shot.

For all her note-taking, and ignoring the lecture, Ino wasn't going to turn down a chance to practice her shooting.

Mmmm, guns.

It really wasn't fair to stick Griff in a room with hot girls with guns. He would just stand there with his badger as obviously he'd already accidentally pointed the gun at his own hand while looking elsewhere.

Ender wasn't really that interested in weaponry at all, but for the sake of appearances he picked up a gun.

He was still a steady, good shot; Petra Arkanian had done her job right teaching him. He put the gun down as soon as he felt he'd shot enough for class purposes, then backed off.

Claire made sure to have on the proper protection and picked up a gun. She had learned the basics years ago from her dad, but her biggest problem was keeping her hand steady.

Katchoo opted for a Smith and Wesson .9mm today, rather than the Colt revolver she'd been getting used to.

Now that Sarah already knew about it, there was no point pretending she wasn't actually a pretty damn good shot.

Effy wasn't drunk or high today. Miracle of miracles.

She picked up a knife, for the moment just idly testing the sharpness as she contemplated the targets. Not something she'd ever done before, but it had to be rather stress reducing.

Yeah like Dean was going to be in the shooting range and not play with the weapons. He went with the knives though as shooting was pretty much second nature to him, so if there was anything he needed to brush up on it wasn't the guns.

Besides, people keep giving him knives, might as well practice using them to the utmost.

Alice's eyes were shining as she approached Sarah after class.

"Where does one get those knives?" she asked. "The light ones, that one can hurl easily. Are they meant to be disposable? If one's being sneaky, it would ruin the effect to have to extricate them from the corpse, wouldn't it?"
