Slacking - Fifth Meeting [Friday, Period 1]

As if there had been no interruption the previous week, Max had his feet up on his desk and was leaned back in his chair with his sunglasses on. It was a tremendous relief to have whatever had been going on behind him since he was pretty sure that not teaching class wouldn't fly for too long. Besides, while Fiona wasn't bad, she didn't have nearly his depth of experience when it came to the subject, and Max tended to think that the most qualified available person should teach a subject.

And who was more qualified than himself when it came to slacking?

Once everyone had arrived he sat up abruptly and looked around. "Good to see you all survived my absence last week. As well as whatever weirdness was going on."

"Slacking is, as I hope you've come to realize, one of those subjects which is best learned through experience. No lecture can really impart the knowledge you need to do it effectively." The fact that Max was just plain awful at giving lectures (or staying awake for them, for that matter) had nothing to do with it. Really.

"With that in mind, today's assignment is actually fairly easy. You will get in troups of two or three and come up with a goal. You need to come up with something that you really do want to accomplish, and it needs to be something that will take some effort. This could be cleaning your room, or cleaning your instructor's room, or it could be taking a vacation somewhere nice. The important parts are that it's something you care about and it's something that requires work to do. So find yourselves partners or groups and come up with your goal. Once you come to me and tell me who's in your group and what you want to accomplish you're free to go."

Max paused just long enough that it might seem he was done talking before he spoke up again. "Oh, and while you're planning you should keep one important thing in mind. Whatever your goal, I'll take on the role of supervisor for it. You'll have to use the things we've discussed and practiced here in class in order to accomplish your goal. And pass." He grinned broadly. "Now get to it."

[I'm out of pocket for most of the weekend, but I'll try to answer questions if anyone has any. It's important that everyone work out their team and their goal by next week's class meeting. More on that in the OCD.]

Claire nodded. "Yeah, that sucked hardcore. I definitely need a nap after class."

She took out a notebook and pen. "Okay, so, got a goal in mind?"

"The vacation sounded pretty sweet," he said, nodding. "I'd rather not set goals of cleaning stuff, if I can help it. That or setting a goal of getting rich quick."

"Cleaning is definitely not on my fun list either," Claire assured him. "A vacation would be nice though. Do we want to do something just for us? Or for a group?"

"I'm easy either way," he said, nodding. "Us or a group. Depending on how much of a hardass this guy is with being a supervisor, more people might either be good or bad."

"Hmm, true," Claire said. "We could go with you and me and each of us bringing a date?"

"Shields if the teacher's too much of a hard ass," Hannibal teased easily. "Okay, so we've got the group size down. Did we wanna go for the vacation goal?"

Claire grinned. "Yeah, let's go with that. Vacation is never a bad thing, especially from a place as crazy as this one."

"Agreed," he said and laughed. "Anywhere specific you think we should shoot for? Really impress this guy with our details and all?"

"Hmm, I guess that depends on what kind of budget we're working with," she said.

"Good point," he said thoughtfully. "Plan small and then have backup plans to expand it if we've got more money than we thought?"

"That works," Claire agreed. "So, let's say a road trip? Something within four hours of here?"

"Easiest one would be DC but is that really a sweet vacation?" he asked. "Educational sure but sweet?"

"Could do New York City," she suggested. "Or head south to a beach in Virginia?"

"Ooh, New York," he said, nodding. "I've only passed through there, never spent time there. That's a city that's got something for everyone, right?"

"That's what they say," Claire said. "I haven't spent much time there either and I didn't get to do any of the touristy stuff."

Cause, y'know, too busy running for her life and trying to save the city doesn't lend itself to tourist attractions.

"Let's shoot for New York," he decided with a nod. "If we've got more money, we can just...spend a helluva lot of money there."

She nodded. "Sounds good to me. We can even look into taking the train instead of driving."

"Oooh, how old fashioned," Hannibal said, wriggling his fingers. "Just let me get a fedora and a pipe and we'll go all the way."

"It's gotta be cheaper than flying," she pointed out. "Plus with all the security issues at airports, it probably takes about the same amount of time."

"Agreed," Hannibal said with a nod. "And I've never been on a train before. Plus for me. I like to try and do everything at least once in my life. This could be my way to mooning the world off the back of a caboose."

He was kidding. Maybe.

"Kidding." Okay, he was.

Claire giggled. "I'm all for trying new things. And I don't really care if you moon the world as long as you don't get us booted off the train."

"Yeah, because walking to New York would suck," he said and made a face. "Hitchhiking, while glamorous in movies, is not that fun. Trust me."

Trust him. Ew, smelly pickup trucks.

"Yeah, definitely not something I would want to experience," she agreed.

"Okay, road trip to New York, do the regular New York things, spend money if we have it," he recited. "Go on a train, avoid hitchhiking and you don't mind if I moon someone as long as it doesn't get us in deep crap."

Claire ticked off all the items on the list she had been keeping. "Sounds good. What kind of regular New York things do we want to do? Statue of Liberty? A Broadway show?"
