Library [06/10]

Once Sam had become sane again after the weekend, he'd realized that leaving the library early last week might not have been as great of an idea as it had seemed at the time, and he'd have to make up for it by being the best worker he could be today.

However, that had been before he'd discovered that The Sims 3 had been released. His shift in the library looked a whole lot different now.

"Will you let me try?" Sam asked, "That's what brothers are for, sometimes."

"Peyton's decided she doesn't want to have sex anymore," Dean said. "Just be friends. Y'know. Without the benefits."

"Do you know why?" Sam asked. "I thought you gave good benefits and all."

"Haven't had any complaints," Dean said with a quick grin, there and gone. "She said it was because she couldn't deal with me having sex with Chuck. Which okay, I could understand, the whole prefer monogomous thing, except she says she doesn't have a problem with me sleeping with Alec. Which... really, shouldn't she have more of a problem with?"

"Maybe it's because Chuck is here and Alec isn't?" Sam suggested, although that didn't make as much sense to him either.

"Cept I'm not going to be going off hunting long term with Chuck," Dean pointed out.

"Yeah, it's not like you even like Chuck," Sam said, because saying that was reassuring to himself.

"Guy's still a douchebag," Dean agreed. "Better when he uses his mouth for other things than talking."

"Dude, too much information," Sam said quickly. "Are you upset about Peyton?"

"I don't like thinking I hurt her," Dean said. "I never would have started the whole, y'know, benefits thing if I thought it would just end up hurting her. But she seemed okay with it -- I mean I was always upfront about having commitments elsewhere so not being able to do the exclusive thing..."

That kind of worry made more sense to Sam. "Hey, you're right, you were upfront with her," he said, even if he had found non-monogamy to be weird himself. "Maybe it just wasn't what she thought it would be. That's not your fault."

"Maybe not, but I'm still the cause of it," Dean said, frowning. He shook his head. "If people are going to change their minds after the fact, makes it kinda hard to figure out where I actually stand."

"I'm assuming she didn't know her mind was going to change," Sam said. "It's flattering that you're so awesome that she wants you all to herself here."

"My awesome can't be contained like that," Dean deadpanned, then sighed again. "It's not like I don't get the whole monogamous thing, but if I was going to go that way, it would probably be with Alec, and I'm pretty sure that's not going to happen, y'know, ever so..."

"Because you don't want it to, or because he doesn't?" Sam asked.

"With the way he grew up, can you really blame him for being twitchy over anything that seems to be telling him what he can and can't do?" Dean said.

"So he might be okay with it in theory, but being official about it would be bad," Sam said, with a nod. "I guess that makes sense, as long as you're okay with it."

"Let me put it this way -- would you dump Peter if he had some weird hangups that you could completely understand him having?"

"Not for a second," Sam said without hesitation. "If you're okay with it, then I get that."

"Alec's my best friend," Dean said as if that was an answer.

"You care about him and about what he wants. That's not a bad thing," Sam said. "And wanting to share yourself with others isn't bad either, I guess. As long as the people involved realize they're sharing."

"I'm always upfront about that -- you know I wouldn't lead someone on," Dean protested.

"I know you're not like that," Sam said. "And I'm sorry things didn't work out with Peyton."
