Spy Games, Monday, 6/8, Period 5

Someone who was observant well beyond the bounds of the human norm might notice that Sarah had a few new-ish-to-the-classroom accessories today -- chunky diamond stud earrings in place of her usual hoops, and a watch that looked almost mannish on her delicate wrist. But for the most part, she looked entirely normal in her blouse and jeans, if on the cheerful end of the spectrum for her.

"Good afternoon," she said, once the students seemed to be there. "Today we're talking about tools that spies use for surveillance and communication -- listening bugs, but also things agents can wear on their person to keep in touch with base without using normal phone systems."

She held up a disk about the size of a thick quarter. "This is a standard modern bug. It's designed so it adheres to the bottom of any piece of furniture you want; it can also be mounted inside a phone to record conversations. It'll transmit via radio frequencies." She went on to give the technical specs of the bug, including the range of the microphone, how long it would last and the quality of the sounds it transmitted.

"If you're an agent and you go out in the field, you'll probably be miked. Right now, I'm wearing send/receive transmitters in my earrings and my watch, and I've seen them in shoes, bracelets, bras, pendants ... anything that a person can wear without arousing suspicion. Some watches even have full Internet access built in for quickly looking up information."

"For your activity today, I've brought a few toys. None of this is the highest-tech stuff on the market; these are products made for and marketed to civilians. But they should still keep you busy for the rest of the class period. I'm around if you have questions."

[OOC: Please assume the toys on the tables have brochures near them explaining what they are and how they work. Thanks!]

Ino held herself carefully, her bruises still aching, but other than that seemed mostly focused on the class--at least, as focused as she ever was.

Karla had been very confused by the whole lecture. What did bugs have to do with anything? Specifically Ben and Ender's electronical thingies? Because all things electronic would now forever be linked to them.

Still, she dutifully took notes. As you do.

Liir listened to the lecture, wondering if there were any spells that could do something similar. He didn't know how well the technology would work in Oz, after all. He'd have to ask Glinda.

Claire took some notes. This was definitely interesting.

Ellie listened to the lecture, wondering if she would ever need any of this spy stuff. Couldn't hurt to take a few notes.

Valentine scribbled down a few notes, mostly so she could supplement them with lines like or you could just implement that all children must have a chip implanted into the back of their necks, claim to have them removed at a certain age, but leave them in and lie like a rug

All of this stuff piqued Sam's interest well, and he was taking the notes to prove it.

Emma was trying to concentrate, really. She was just still in a horrible mood after last week, and even her fascination with the listening devices wasn't enough to alleviate it.

Poking the items while wearing a highly dubious expression was probably not the best way to handle them. That was about as far as Karla got, though.

After the teacher had gone away, Emma slid over to Karla, dropping the bracelet on her desk.

"A recharge would, unfortunately, be greatly appreciated," she said quietly. "Before I start trying to kill people with my brain."

Liir fiddled with a few of the items, trying to figure out what their use might be.

Claire picked up a room transmitter (http://www.gcomtech.com/index.php?app=ccp0&ns=prodshow&ref=gsm-room-transmitter&sid=9791tcnvwxz2c596d448qh3h6bd3zkf8) and idly speculated on ways she could use something like that to her advantage.

Ellie was fascinated by all the spy gear, though it was the secret agent pen (http://www.spygear.net/spy-gear/spy-toys/secret_agent_pen) that really caught her attention.

Ender didn't linger on anything in particular as he passed from device to device with a carefully neutral expression on his face. He was the picture of idle disinterest, even as he categorized everything in the back of his mind.

He knew surveillance. Just not anything this obvious.

Katchoo hadn't forgotten to tag into this thread, really was doing a fairly good job of not outwardly freaking out about the bugs. She was also doing a pretty good job of keeping to herself, but when was that new?

This kind of thing wasn't something that Dean had a lot of experience using so he was poking at the examples on display as much as any of the students.
