Sarah started the class by handing slips of paper to Katina, Agnes, Alice, Claire, Edmund, Effy, Griff, Karla and Liir ~~assuming they were all here~~. "If you get a piece of paper," she announced, "don't read it out loud, don't show it to your neighbor, don't drop it on the floor. Consider it classified information."

The papers said THERE IS CANDY ON THE TOP SHELF OF THE CABINET IN THE BACK OF THE ROOM, so it might not have seemed all that cloak-and-dagger, but Sarah was a spy.

"Anyhow, today we're talking about persuasion and interrogation. It's another basic piece of spywork -- somebody knows something you don't know, and you want to find out what it is. The ideal is to get them to tell you without realizing what they gave away, but that's not always possible. I'm passing out a handout listing off some common interrogation techniques, ranging from direct questioning -- which actually works most of the time -- to 'good cop-bad cop', playing on the other person's emotions, repeating the question until the other person gets bored enough to answer, or lying to convince the subject you already know everything anyhow. I'd recommend you take a few minutes to read through the handout before we move on." She did that, reviewing it herself while the class read.

"As you may have gathered from the start of class, half of you know something now. You're interviewees. The other half don't. You're interrogators. Interrogators, you can use any tactic up to the threat of physical force to find out what was written on the paper. No actual physical force, and if your interviewee seriously tells you to back off, back off. Work in interrogator-interviewee pairs or in small groups. And if you find out what's on the paper, you may put the information to use at the end of class. That goes double for any interviewee who makes it through without cracking."

Liir, fresh from his trip to Oz, was a bit tired but very aware. It was an unpleasant combination.

Effy eyed the piece of paper, and tucked it into her pocket. Thought it was a little weird, but whatever.

Claire read the slip of paper and then, after getting the instructions not to share the information, ripped it into teeny tiny pieces.

Karla read the paper and then vanished it. Seemed much less likely to be found that way. That and it was nice to be able to do Craft again.

With a sigh and a desperate hope that no one made any (more) cracks about her eating habits, Agnes crumpled the paper into a ball and swallowed it.

Alice read the paper, frowned at it, and committed it to memory. And then she popped it into her mouth, chewed, and swallowed.

Griff was concerned at having been chosen, but swore he would not give in and let anyone have the candy.

In Valentine's experience, she never did have much of a problem getting what she wanted out of a situation. Even if it meant changing exactly what it was she wanted. But that was typically in actions, not basic information, so this could be...interesting.

Emma was very, very used to getting what she wanted, at least lately, so she wasn't too worried about the assignment.

*You know it won't be fair if you just take the information from someone,* Karla sent to Emma on a distaff psychic thread. There may have been the slightest element of "taunt" in there.

< I wasn't aware that spying was supposed to be fair, darling, > Emma fired back, amusement lacing her tone. < Was that supposed to be a dare? >

Karla blinked back at her, innocently. *Dare? Not at all. Though my control is back back at 'perfect' again. So you would have to use pure interrogational skill to get the information you want.*

Blue eyes met blue eyes as Karla shot Emma a wicked grin. *Kiss kiss.*

That? Would be the equivalent of a very loud psychic raspberry sent in Karla's direction, even as Emma theoretically kept her focus on the teacher.

< Why would I play with you, when there's more tempting meat on the table? > she asked, casting a significant glance at some of the boys in the room. < A bottle of champagne against that wine of yours says that I can get it by skill alone. > She wasn't going to specify what kind of skill. That would take all the fun out of it.

< Unless, of course, you want to play rough. > Emma's smile was equally impish. < I'm sure I could oblige you. >

*Play rough? You know, I'm kind of tempted just to find out what that means. But, by all means, I'll be happy to let you break, ahem, I mean practice on that other boy.* Karla mindvoice was filled with sardonic amusement.
