Spy Games, Class 3, Monday period 5

When the class filed in, they didn't find Sarah waiting for them, but a rather familiar looking priest.

"Hello class," he greeted them. "Your teacher couldn't be here today so she asked me to fill in for her. I'm Father Winchester.

"Our sermon today is on disguises. Yeah, sure you can get a lot of information by the breaking and entering route, but sometimes you're going to have to interact with people. Sometimes you're going to want to blend in, get them to not notice you. Other times you're going to want to get them to trust you, tell you things they might not ordinarily do so. Disguises are an important tool in both situations.

"Say you need to check some medical records -- you're going to have a lot better chance of getting to them without incident if you dress like you belong, some scrubs or a white coat and suddenly youre an orderly or a doctor and no one's looking at you twice or questioning why you're roaming the halls or going into that office.

"Or say someone's died and you think there's something hinky about it. The family's in mourning, they're not going to want to talk to just any Joe Blow about the details." Dean put on his most pious expression. "But a priest paying a courtesy call to pay his respects and offer his condolences, now that's someone they'll feel comfortable talking about the gory details to."

Dean grinned at them. "Every situation is going to be different, but with a little ingenuity you can come up with a disguise to fit. Need to get into a place and have some uninterrupted time there? How about posing as exterminators that are spraying for something that requires an empty house? All you need is to think outside the box."

He gestured to a set of racks full of all sorts of clothing and boxes of accessories. "Over there is a broad selection of things you can use to create a disguise. What I want you to do is to not only put together a disguise but come up with a senario where that particular disguise would be useful. Extra points given for originality."

She flicked her fingers at him. "You're assuming people are so blind as to not know their officers," Ino said reprovingly. "That's lazy thinking."

He shook his head.

"Certainly not. Only name names if you have them, though those are easy enough to get."

"Names aren't personalities though," she pointed out. "So your Intel had better be good if you don't want to name the wrong one, and you can't ignore the fact that most officers will already have soldiers that they prefer to send for things--if you're using that as an excuse you'd better have a reason for why the usual guy isn't doing it."

"Names usually come with information," he pointed out, "if you listen to the soldiers. It doesn't take long to get a feel for things if you know the basics."

Which he did. That's why he'd chosen the outfit he had. It was the one thing he was confident he could pull off.

"Lazy," she chided, "how long are you going to be in the army? How long are you going to stick around? With that sort of set up you'd better be damn certain you're in and out in a matter of hours 'cause any longer and you're going to run into people who happen to notice things like, oh hey, that campfire has another mouth to feed, or that tent has another soldier, or who is that person, the new kid, when we've been travelling for months together and living and working and you have no real base."

"You're bringing in advanced planning. For a quick few hours, to get access? It's a functional disguise.

"I don't recall there being any further needs mentioned."

"That's why it's a sloppy plan," she said patiently. "A good plan covers as many bases as it can. It wasn't mentioned not dealing with longer issues either, so it's a perfectly valid concern."

Not even touching on his everyone hates their officers bit. Nonsense.

"You're not the only clever person, and assuming that the soldiers in the army have the intelligence of newts is just going to screw you up."

"Now you're the one assuming," he said.

"I never said they're stupid, only that they wouldn't care. The military's a warm bed and something to eat for most of them, and even the ones who take pride in the position don't make waves or cause trouble for fear of getting in trouble.

"Besides, there's plenty of ways to get out of the camp even if you're discovered being there when you shouldn't be. There's enough waifs and pretenders that you could easily claim you were trying out, that uniform was your brothers and with him dead of an illness, your family kicked you out."

It was that kind of story that Trism had told him worked and he'd seen others give it.

"The exercise was to come up with a viable disguise and story; I did, and it's viable because I know enough about how a camp functions in my world to pull it off even with some of the troubles you mentioned. Any disguise has holes. Knowing what you can do and can't do is part of picking a job."

She snorted. "And you're assuming every army is the same as your own." Which was really piddly sounding--could they even march in the same direction? "If you want to die, sure go ahead and not care about the obvious issues, I'm so sorry you feel the need to tell me how to do my job."

He raised an eyebrow.

"I don't recall doing that at all," he answered her, wondering where that had come from.

"I was talking strictly about the military at home. I wouldn't have the first clue about things around here."

He plucked at the uniform sleeve.

"See?"

And he wasn't touching that last one with a twenty foot pole because it was ridiculous. He'd never tell her how to do her job.

"Funny," Ino said coolly, "how they just managed to have a uniform from your world on the racks. It looks like a this-world uniform to me."

"It might match some military here," he admitted, "from the past. Looking through a few books, I've found things that look a bit like Ozian fashion."

Ozian, Napoleonic. Tomato, potato.

"But I picked it (http://www.karnival-house.co.uk/acatalog/4475G.jpg), even modified it, to look like Home Guard (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomhigh/2118474.html?thread=136707658#t136707658)."

It was what he'd told Katina and Dean as well.

She didn't look impressed, not really. Ino was still having issues here.

"Past military is fair useless considering our times."
