SAT Prep - Workshop #2 [Classroom]

"Good morning, everyone," Veronica said once her students had arrived. "Today we're going to start digging in to the actual test. There are three components of the SAT: critical reading, mathmatics and writing. We'll discuss tips and tricks for all three sections, but today we're going to start with the critical reading section."

She passed out a hand out. "The critical reading section is seventy minutes of the test and is designed to test your vocabulary and reading comprehension. Today we're going to focus on the vocabulary section. There are computers set up along the back and I want you to spend some time playing a vocabulary game."

Jennifer started the activity, if a little slowly due to computer unfamiliarity. But she was picking up on that stuff fast.

She stared for a bit at one of the questions. "Chthonic? That's a real word?"

Harper leaned over. "You're getting weird words too? I got stuff like piton and omphaloskepsis," she whispered.

"Pitons are things for rock climbing, right?" Jennifer said.

"That would be my guess," said Harper, clicking a mouse button. "Okay, here's another weird one: bifurcate."

"Bi means two, right?" Jennifer said. "I just don't know what a furcate is."

"Let's see what the game says," said Harper, clicking. "Oh! It means forked. Furc, fork, I guess they are kinda similar."

"So, forked twice?" Jennifer said. "That sounds... weird."

"People don't really talk like that, do they?" asked Harper. "I mean, I've never heard anyone use words like this."

"No one I know," Jennifer said. "But that sort of language is used in court sometimes."

"And on college admissions tests," added Harper.

"Exactly," Jennifer said. "You're... Harper, right?"

"That's right! And you're one of the new kids. Jennifer, right?"

"That's me," Jennifer said. "This class is actually really useful, don't you think?"

"Definitely! I have no idea what my college plans are yet, but it'll be helpful to get a good score on the SATs," said Harper, nodding.

"Never a bad idea, investing in your future like that," Jennifer said.

"Right!" said Harper. "So, do you know what you want to go to college for?"

"Pre-law," Jennifer said. "I'm planning on being a criminal lawyer."

"That sounds cool. My mom is a lawyer at some big firm in New York," said Harper."

"Really?" Jennifer said. "That's pretty neat. I might want to talk to her, sometime. If that'd be okay with you."

"Oh, sure!" said Harper. "Have you met a girl named Turtle? She wants to be a lawyer, too."

"I met her at the picnic," Jennifer said. "I didn't know that, though."

"We were talking about it at one of the parties last week," said Harper.

"I'll have to talk with her about it," Jennifer said.

Jon couldn't believe this site. "Do they really give rice to people just for us clicking on words?"

At the rate he was going, they'd be dropping bags of rice on peoples heads.

Sam couldn't help but think about what Ms. Devereaux had said yesterday about not being ashamed of being literate, and of being confident in knowing words as he looked over the vocabulary. There were times when he thought about this kind of studying and felt like the world's biggest geek, but he had to remember that there wasn't anything wrong with it.

Blaaarg. It was way too early in the morning for this. Turtle decided that whoever did this scheduling needed to be shot in the foot.

She's around and happy to help.

Presumably our fearless TA will also be around and happy to help. But please wait for him to tag in.

Harry was around and happy to help. And if not able to help, he was always at least able to provide a smartass remark.

[I'm at work and netless until 6 PM EDT though. Woe.]

I have plans for next week's lesson, oh yes. *rubs hands together*
