Students for the Criminal Justice workshop were notified to meet at the main campfire ~~CAMPFIRE!~~ for their workshop.

As the students gather the first thing the would probably notice is there is a large truck sitting next to the campfire. How it got there on an island with weetiny streets? Sorry. Gibbs isn't telling. Next to the truck is a stack of large plastic cases resembling tackle boxes. Each box was labelled with the name of the students.

Gibbs himself is standing next to the truck with his ever present cup of coffee in his hand. "Welcome to the Criminal Justice workshop," he said once everyone had arrived. "I'm Jethro Gibbs. I've spent the last 16 years working for NCIS. If you've never heard of it, I wouldn't be surprised. Think of it as the FBI for the Navy and Marines. For the next several weeks I'm going to be drilling into your heads the basics of investigating a criminal case."

He paused long enough to take a sip of coffee before continuing.

"First off, introductions. Everyone tell me your name and what you hope to get out of this course," Gibbs said as he began handing out a forensic equipment checklist. "After that I want you to go through the van and fill up your forensic kits. Get everything on the list except for the cameras. We'll have to share those as there aren't enough to go around. Make sure you bring your forensic equipment to each class Or you're fired. When you're done with your kits you'll need to take your own fingerprints. This is standard procedure in case you accidentally touch something at a crime scene without gloves."

He then gave everyone a glare of warning.

"Which we shouldn't have to do because you'll be wearing gloves the entire time we're investigating a crime scene. But that's another class. Now tell me who you are, get your kits together and get your fingerprints taken."

Ben couldn't believe he had to use ink, of all things. "Where's the scanner?" he muttered to himself.

"Can't afford one so we're doing it the old fashion way," Gibbs replied sharply.

Ben held up his inky fingers. "But doesn't this give you a greater chance of contaminating evidence with your hands? Plus it's gross."

"First of all you're not handling any evidence," Gibbs said gruffly. "Secondly you're going to be putting on a pair of gloves before you even think of going anything that remotely resembles evidence. Understand?"

"Of course," Ben said. "I've conducted investigations. It's going to take ten minutes of scrubbing and three pairs of gloves before I'm not covering everything I touch with this stuff. There's better ways to spend time."

"Well you have plenty of times to wash your hands between now and next week," Gibbs replied in a tone that clearly indicated he was not going to discuss it any further.

Griff couldn't help overhearing the exchange with the teacher. "You've conducted investigations?"

Ben nodded. "I was a lieutenant in the Galactic Alliance Guard."

"Galactic, huh?" Griff was working on not staring at the aliens. "I hope you're just that good rather than your Guard being desperate for warm bodies."

It had really been nepotism at its most basic, but Ben didn't like to mention that.

"I'm pretty good," he said. "Not involved any more. The GAG got dissolved with the new government."

"And, just to clarify, you're from outer space, right?" Sounded almost British. "So you're talking about governments in outer space changing over." Blowing his mind, yes.

Ben nodded. "A galaxy far, far away, even," he said with a small smile. "We go through governments, well, a lot."

Had to be the kid who belonged to the wee girl with no shoes. "You've gotta excuse me, Ben was it? But man, how far is far, far?"

"A few trillion lightyears that way," Ben said, pointing up. "Takes a couple of days to get home."

"Trillion. Sure." Good God! "Better than a gazillion. Sorry, I'm new." Look how it was an excuse now.

"Gazillion isn't a real number," Ben pointed out. "You'll get used to the strangeness after a while, really."

"Equally understandable as more than imaginable," Griff replied. "I'm just glad you all aren't here to probe us unpleasantly."

Ben snickered. "No thanks," he said. "I never understood what the aliens were supposed to be gaining doing that anyway."
