Library [5.12]

Anemone had waited until first-thing this morning to snag a portal back to Fandom, and as a result had needed to run from the Causeway up to the school, barely managing to skid into the library on time, Gulliver hanging on to her for dear life.

She dumped her bags behind the desk, taking a seat and kicking her feet up while she looked over her class schedule. Four classes this summer, and for once none of them sounded absolutely mind-numbing.

She clearly owed Maria big. Really big.

...and it looked like it was a good thing she'd come back today instead of skipping work, since she had two classes. Yikes.

Humming happily, Anemone started wandering the stacks, tidying up before she had to leave for second period. Hopefully Dr. Jones wouldn't mind too much if she had to close the library for a little bit...

[I'm back, and so are Anemone and Gulliver, so ~~wait for~~ the OCD is up!]

Anemone's around somewhere, just follow the sounds of the singing.

The library is closed while Anemone is at Sexual Anthropology, unless Dr. Jones lets you in.

Anemone's back, and coloring at the front desk.

The library is closed unless you are a library aide or Dr. Jones.

Anemone's run away for her Flight class, so you'll need to talk to the librarian or Gulliver.

We suggest the librarian.

She's back, again, and is off in the stacks, shelving books. Today is a productive day!

Shelving accomplished, Anemone found herself back at the desk, her nose in a book. Productivity was nice while it lasted...

I spent a whole week OCD-less. Hold me.

And you escaped Virginia without getting swine flu (I swear, the news crews are just LOVING this because it gives them something URGENT to report on or something)!

I did not, however, escape without getting sick. I get colds every damn time I fly, and this time was no exception.

However, my method of self-medication was frozen margaritas out of the blender as I lay on the beach. Because alcohol kills germs.

Ugh, flights are a magnet for getting sick. All that recycled air. But I approve of your treatment! I hope you are feeling better!

Jack gave a smile of recognition tot he pink-haired girl from flying class as he found his way to the desk, and cleared his throat to encourage her to look up from her book. "Excuse me?"

I am on the couch with my orange juice and laptop, because I am a bad horrible sneaky person who told my boss I wasn't flying back until tonight. *halo*

I need a day to ditch the EST and reset to CST, dammit. Also, I have a week of spammy flist to catch up on. I turn my back for a few days, and you people go wild...

Anemone looked up, blinking at bit as she forced her brain out of her world of fiction and back to reality.

"Oh, hi," she responded, trying to recall his name. Jake? No. Jim? No... "Can I help you?"

"I need books about U.S. history," Jack said. "The last hundred-odd years, especially, but I'm starting from near zero so anything would be good."

He smiled a bit. "Anemone, wasn't it?"

Anemone grinned. "I have a list," she announced, rifling through one of the desk drawers. "Yeah, I'm Anemone. Jack, right? Are you one of the time-tossed ones too, then?"

"Guilty as charged on both points," Jack said, raking a hand back through his curls. "It's 1899 at home, and we don't have these United States people keep going on about. Are you also from another year?"

"Opposite direction," Anemone replied, pulling out a highlighter to mark some of the items on the paper. "We don't have a United States at home either. I'm from about 10,000 years in the future, so I ended up taking US History last term."

"I've been here two years, and I still get the holidays mixed up."

"I would have taken history, if it had been offered and I'd known how different it was here," Jack mused. "I was quite good at European history, but that's for a different world entirely."

He blinked. "I can't even conceive of 10,000 years. A hundred is enough for me, I think."

"I'm not good with Europe, either," Anemone confessed. "Or any other continent, for that matter. My prior guardian wasn't big on history."

"I like to think of it as just being on a whole different planet. That much time just makes my head hurt," she laughed.

"History was my guardian's favorite thing, next to languages and detective work." And drinking blood, but that was a bit too much information for a first encounter -- as was the fact Sebastien's expertise in history came from living through so much of it.

"I suppose I should feel lucky things are at least similar enough in most ways that I'm not quite feeling as though I'm on Mars."

"Oh, Dewey loved history, but he didn't think I needed it," she said blithely. There were a lot of things Dewey never taught Anemone, but most of the time she didn't really care. "He could be really obsessive about some of it."

"I dunno, Mars might be nice." The grin she shot him was impish. "At least then people wouldn't expect us to know all of this stuff. Aliens in an alien land!"

Jack laughed aloud. "And we'd stand out more, among all the little men with green skin," he said ~~as the mun hoped that was a Victorian stereotype~~. "Though I suppose your hair doesn't exactly blend. Is it a common color where you're from?"

"Doesn't blend, no, and doesn't take dye. I tried a few times," she said, twirling a few strands. "It's natural, but it's not common. My sisters have blue and purple hair, but we're special."

"It is special," Jack said. "If you want some unsolicited advice, you shouldn't dye it and cover that up. How many sisters do you have?"

Valentine found herself up early, with some time to spare before her first workshop, but there was a library. Of course she'd have to at least check it out, if not spend copious amounts of time there. She slipped in, and into the stacks to start just aimlessly checking out titles, wondering exactly where that singing was coming from.

Oh, she liked this boy, and Anemone rewarded him with a bright smile. "I had lots," she said dreamily. "Millions of half-siblings, really, and some lost little girls that were could-have-beens, but only two sisters that are like me; Eureka and Sakura."

The singing was currently coming from the 400s, as Anemone sat on the floor and sorted through dictionaries. The Spanish section had set up their own Inquisition and had been trying to run out the other languages again, and Anemone was amusing herself by making up nonsense songs with the words on the covers.

That answer didn't exactly make sense to him, but Jack didn't want to point that out and lose the bright smile or the dreamy tone. "It sounds lovely," he said. "... you were working on a list of books for me, weren't you?"

And Valentine was actually working her way in that direction, not to follow the music so much as it seemed that she was just drawn toward language in her wandering.

And promptly tripping over one of the Spanish dictionaries. She faltered, catching herself and her surprise.

No one expects the Spanish Inquisition. Not even a Wiggin.

"Oh," she said, looking down at the book, and that's when she also noticed the girl with the pink hair surrounded by more.

"Hello."

"Oh." Anemone mentally shook herself, making a firm effort to stay grounded. Going space-case while she was working was a Bad Plan.

Strange-crazy and violent-crazy, Anemone could handle. She was always a little bit off. But she hated her spaced-out fits.

"Sorry." Anemone handed over the paper with a grin. "Sometimes I get distracted easily. Most of the books are all in the same section... the library is organized by a number system. All the history books are over in the 900s, and North American stuff is 970s... you just follow the numbers." She leaned over to point at the locations she'd written out by the titles. "See? All arranged by topic, then subtopic, and by author."

Anemone looked up. "Oh," she said. "Hello. I didn't hear you come in. Did you need help finding something?"

Valentine shook her head. "I was just looking around," she said. "What about you? Or do you usually just pull a bunch of books off the shelf like that?"

"It looks like I should find what I want easily enough," Jack said, glancing over the paper. "Thank you, Anemone."

"Well, it was the fault of the Spaniards," Anemone responded, making a face at one pile. "They were pushing out the other languages again. It's not as bad as when philosophy and psychology get into it with religion, but it's still vexing."

She grinned up at the girl. "Anemone, library aide. They pay me to make them behave, although I'd probably just pull them off the shelves for fun, too."

"Valentine, library observer. Are the books really interacting, or do you just have an astonishing imagination? I'd normally just think it was the latter, but, around here, the former seems just as true."

"The library does what it wants to do, and Special Collections is ten times worse," Anemone said cheerfully. "One day, my books turned into kittens, I've had a giant bird around, and there were pi-rats."

"I do have a good imagination and an odd sense of humor, but even I'm not this crazy." Usually.

"So much," Valentine noted, "for expecting some quiet time in the library, then, huh?"

"When it's quiet? It's planning something," Anemone said seriously. "Although you might be the first real patron, if you make repeat trips. I go weeks without seeing a soul."

Valentine's eyes shifted toward the bookshelves. "Yeah," she agreed. "It's always the quiet ones you've got to watch out for."
