Care for Magical Creatures; Friday, Period 2 [ 04/24 ].

"Good morning, students!" Minsc greeted his class, the level of his joviality higher than usual not because it was the last class, but because after today, he wouldn't have to worry about writing up exams for the kids for a good while. Unfortunately, for that task, the classroom looked a bit like what Minsc would consider a torture chamber: all the desks lined up in neat little rows, awaiting butts to fill them in and to be used for writing.

He considered proposing their destruction once everyone was done, to bring things around full circle, but didn't want to risk being in trouble again.

"Here are you exams! Please complete them and leave them on my desk when you are finished, along with your reports! And then, get out of here! Enjoy your day! Enjoy your week! Enjoy whatever! Maybe I will see some of you in my workshop this summer; maybe not. Either way, Boo and me wish you well, so, get to it!"

Leto wrote fairly short and precise replies, based on the lectures. The extra credit, made him frown, and he resisted the urge to write 'because he is a hamster', and instead wrote:

Because he no doubt has matters of graver importance to deal with.

Gwynn took a long time on her exam, making sure her answers were detailed.

Because Boo is far more concerned with looking out for those that might be weaker than he is.

Arthur's exam was written out well, at least to his experience; despite his grumbling, he'd paid attention as much as he could, unwilling to do anything in a way that wasn't properly. Despite the notable wariness of magic, as evidenced in his answers.

As for the extra credit, Arthur had... more than a passing knowledge of the ways of knights.

This no doubt has something to do with the size of his tail, he wrote, But for your dignity and mine, I shan't answer this question.

The word his had, obviously later down the line, been inserted between 'dignity' and 'and'.

Dōjima twirled her pen between her fingers, working thoughtfully as she answered each question.

1. Traumatic, non-traumatic, and embarrassing.

2. There are enchanted items, which can be dangerous because you never know if they're enchanted, or to do what, and scrolls, which at least give you information about what happened.

3. It's fun! Well, I liked being a bunny, but not so much a zombie. If you are going to transform on purpose, carry a sign or a note, so that no one eats you by mistake.

4. If it's exhibiting very human characteristics or trying to communicate with you? It's a person.

5. The centaur and mermaids are both examples of half-transformations.

6. They could turn you into a bug and step on you, or a kitten that's easily distracted, and then you can't stop them.

7. Attitude and distinguishing characteristics tend to carry over during transformations. I make a cute bunny, and just look at Reno both times he's been a chicken-thing.

Extra Credit: Hamster stories are not for human ears!

1. Magical, shapeshiftery, and freaky mad scientist crap. Trust me on that. I seen it.
2. Like, ring and scroll? Scroll lasts longer. Could be a drawback if you like having thumbs.
3. Maybe to blend in or to be stronger or something like that. Except they gotta be careful it don't get to their head all wrong.
4. If they act smart or have human features somewhere or act disoriented or real out of place.
5. Mermaids, that freakish chicken guy. Stuff like that.
6. Dude. Frog. That status effect freaking sucks. Carry remedies.
7. My hair color stuck around one time. My tattoos always seem to stick. Personality, too.
Extra Credit: I'm willing to bet it's cause hamsters don't talk.

Firekeeper just looked at the paper with dismay. Perhaps she could approach Minsc after class and ask to take the final in a way that didn't involve writing?

Really, Minsc should be used to Arthur's papers by now. It was elaborate, the handwriting was pitch-perfect, and absolutely no boots were mentioned in the entire thing.

Although it was meant to show some good old fashioned warning for the dangers of such magics, if you read behind the lines, the idea that if you must turn into something, turn into something with teeth swam underneath the surface.

Leto handed in a quite long essay on his transformation into a lion. He had avoided making it too personal, and it included a few long, philosophical discussions on the impact on personality of the transformed.

Gwynn turned in a long and concise paper on what it had been like to turn into a fox for a few days. She had quite enjoyed the experience.

Reno's paper about turning into a chocobo was about as neatly typed up as a paper written by Reno possibly could be. Which meant, really, that he'd run it through a spell check exactly once, and it even managed to fix one or two of his multitude of errors.

Really, it was an entire page about how having no thumbs sucked, but there was possibly nothing in the world more awesome than being able to run like that.

John handed in the typed report he'd written up earlier in the week detailing how procrastination, a kitten, and a cookie had conspired against him and how that led to him never turning into a god-forsaken bunny during this semester.

There was also a note how if he was unlucky as usual, it would happen just when things were most chaotic. Like during graduation brunch.

Dōjima turned in a paper on her time as a bunny, as well as some innocent anecdotes from the day she'd been a boy the previous semester. After all, you could still transform without becoming an animal.

The whole literacy issue didn't prevent her from turning in her paper, though. With Tahiri's assistance, Firekeeper had managed to construct something that sort of resembled an essay, about the time she'd spent in the Preserve "being a wolf". Sure, it hadn't been a physical transformation, but it had required an entirely different mindset from living with humans, and so it counted in her book. At least, that was the argument she'd be trying to make if she knew enough about essays to know that she was supposed to have an argument.

Arthur was more than a little bit happy that this was over with. Except for the part where he wasn't - at least preparing for class had given him something to do.

Still, he was doing his best to look idle about the whole thing.

Firekeeper (with Blind Seer, of course) was here, and while she still wasn't entirely comfortable with the subject matter of the class, she did have to appreciate how it had challenged her to think and confront her attitudes about it on a weekly basis.
