Phys Ed: Week 14, Period 1 (Fri. 4/17)

The floor of the Danger Shop gymnasium was covered with thick, blue mats. To one side, students might notice a bucket of blue rags and a bucket of short, bantos rods with hand guards.

"Today we're playing Capture the Flag," Ronon's booming voice echoed in the empty room. "The goal's to grab the other guy's flag." He paused with a slightly evil smile remembering how his friends back home failed fiercely at this game. "No penalties. Nothing off limits. Once someone grabs the flag a new round starts. After every round, the level of difficulty’s increased. It’s to simulate battle since after every encounter there’s the possibility of injury. Round two's one-handed. Round three's one handed and one-legged. Round four's one handed, one-legged, and one-eyed." Someone always gave up at round four. Something about playing with one eye closed didn't work for most.

"Get your uniform, a flag, a partner, and get going."

Priestly had been thinking of throwing paper in case Claire threw rock to counter his scissors this time. Then he figured that she would figure on him figuring that and throw scissors, so she should throw rock. But if she figured on him figuring that she'd figure --

Yeah, he threw scissors again.

"Tie."

"Your turn to count," Claire said, withdrawing her hand (and wobbling a little as she tried to stand on one foot). "One time I saw this massive rock-paper-scissors poster with, like, goat and nuclear attack throws."

Priestly hopped up on one foot as well. "See, that kind of creativity would make it more interesting. Like, I could go 'one, two, three' and throw 'Sun going supernova and obliterating the solar system' and win."

Claire bounced a little to keep her balance. "And then I'd have to throw 'God'" -- there was a little halo gesture -- "on the next round to have any chance of beating you."

"Which I'd totally have to counter with the Invisible Pink Unicorn. Or possibly Marxism." Priestly was getting distracted. What were they doing? Ah, yes. "Uh, one-two-three." He threw rock.

"Or flying spaghetti monster," Claire said solemnly, as she threw paper. "Oh, yay, my round."

She was so overjoyed.

Priestly closed his eye and suddenly had to stick his arm out to the side and flail it around in a desperate attempt to keep his balance.

This didn't prevent him from continuing the conversation, though. "I dunno. The Flying Spaghetti Monster is primarily protesting religion in schools and intelligent design. The Invisible Pink Unicorn is more anti-religion itself, a symbol of conversational intolerance more than one of absurd diversity."

Yes, Priestly put far too much thought into things like this.

"Both of which would probably be totally wiped out by the sun going supernova, unless we manage interstellar travel, first."

"So unicorns beat spaghetti," Claire said, holding very, very still. She'd found her one-eyed balance; no need to move enough to mess it up. "But, okay, does the sun going supernova beat things that aren't real anyhow? Even if we aren't still around, all of our satellite transmissions and the information would be."

She wobbled. "Eeep. One, two, three..."

She threw scissors.

"Okay, good point. That stuff will keep expanding until the end of the universe. But that begs the question," he threw paper and grimaced. "Does paper really beat rock? It only covers it up. The rock is still in existence underneath the paper. It's still affecting the world. And when scissors cuts paper, who's to say that the paper isn't dividing to conquer? Paper can cover scissors as easily as it covers rock."

"And when rock smashes scissors, it's really just dividing them into smaller blades, right? And it probably scratches up the rock," Claire said, following along. "I think we decided rock-paper-scissors is a stupid game."

She put her raised foot back on the ground. "... But I still won."

"Did not -- oh, yeah, I guess you did." Priestly set his own foot back on the ground. "I totally should have thrown 'the end of the universe'."

Claire shrugged slightly, triumphantly. "Sorry. Next time?"

"Sure. It'll give me time to figure out the proper hand gesture."
