Movie Appreciation: Friday, 4/3/09, Period 3

Mr. Dex wasn't in the classroom today. Instead, assorted sports equipment was piled in a large box near the door and Tony stood at the front of the room bouncing a cricket bat lightly against his hand.

"Mr. Dex was kinda busy, so he asked me to cover," Tony said. "So, okay, when weird sh- stuff goes down, there's not usually a lot of reliable information. You gotta go to the folklore to find anything useful. In the old days, they told stories around the campfire, but now our folklore gets filmed in full technicolor. The movies are full of zombie stories. I've got a few clips here to show you and then whoever's actually faced the ones outside can tell us how accurate they are. Maybe the movies'll give us some ideas how to deal with these things."

He showed clips from Vaughn of the Dead: fighting zombies and blending in; Against: fighting zombies with guns and 31 Days After: an infected soldier.

Tony gestured at the box of sports gear. "Dinah and I found this stuff in storage, so if you don't have anything to fight with, go ahead and grab something from here. Not saying you should run out and find something to fight; just be ready. And be safe." A couple of baseball bats and hockey sticks were visible on top of the pile, but Tony and Dinah had grabbed whatever they could find, so there was all kinds of totally moddable stuff if you looked through it. There were golf clubs, padding, helmets, cleats and even a bowling ball.

Marco looked at the weapons, Marco glanced up, Marco grinned. "I have a very, very bad idea."

"Wolves have very, very sharp teeth." Marco informed Tony.

Marco was not thinking of that. He had a lot of experience doing that. "Yeah. Among other things, but I think a wolf would be the most useful."

"Wolves can get BITTEN," Sokka contributed. "If you can do a vending machine, can you be a robot, instead?"

"I didn't mean to be a vending machine! I can mean to be a wolf!" Sense making, Marco is not.

Angela tugged a field hockey stick out of the pile, testing the weight of it a moment. Not that she really knew what would be good, but it seemed like the thing to do.

She'd been relying on running and hiding for the past two days, but a weapon would probably be a good idea.

Adam grabbed a baseball bat from the pile and wondered if he could snag a practice staff from the gym...

You know, to use when he wasn't morphed.

Dinah still had her baseball bat, but now had appropriated cleats, and elbow and knee protectors. Kind of like wearing armor, a little. Zombie-fighting being a full-contact sport.

Sokka was tempted -- SOOOOOO tempted -- to suit up and strap one of everything to his body, just in case. SOOOOOO tempted.

Idea number two was to put on shoulder pads and a hockey goalie mask, and stick a bunch of hockey sticks in a golf bag. He kinda had the feeling that'd been done before, though.

No, he'd do best to stick with his boomerang and machete. Keep it light, lean, and mean, because with zombies, dodging was CRITICAL.
