Ethics [Tuesday, March 31, Second period]

No Skywalker or other Jedi again this week. Instead there was a ninja and a story.

"Today we discuss a story about a sort of justice," Temari told the class dryly. "A king who has his own way of punishment and reward for guilt or innocence. The person accused had the choice of opening one of two doors to meet his fate. One held a tiger and the other held a woman to be married."

...yeah.

"Not exactly the reward I would like, but if one enjoyed that..." She shrugged. "The story is that the king's daughter fell in love with a man below her station, and--as punishment to him for this crime--he was forced to choose between the two doors. The princess knew which door held what and had the choice of which to tell him to pick. A stupid story if you ask me. They should have just run off before it got to that point."

Never mind that. "Break up into groups and decide what the princess told him to pick."

So, which will it be? Lady or tiger?

Chuck didn't feel much like participating but, again, Temari could kick his ass. So he was participating.

"So what will she do?" Helen asked

"Lady, definitely," Chuck said. "Most women are self-sacrificing like that."

And being forced to get married was definitely the worse punishment in the long run. Women were also bitches like that.

"I might just prefer him dead," Helen said thoughtfully. maybe she would, maybe she wouldn't, but she felt like saying it so...

"Wouldn't you feel guilty?" he asked. "He didn't really do anything wrong, after all. Not his fault your dad is an ass."

Personally he'd pick the tiger too. He was a jackass though.

She shrugged. "Maybe I'd rather he be dead than let anyone else have him."

"I wouldn't say that too loud," Chuck suggested. "People might get the wrong idea about you."

And think she was a psycho.

She laughed. "Or maybe I'm just saying it to see how you react."

"Hey, who am I to judge? I would have gone with the tiger too," Chuck replied.

Helen grinned. "Really? Why?"

Chuck shrugged. "I don't know. I know that I just would."

He was trying to not admit he was the jealous type.

"I think I might be fairly jealous," Helen admitted.

"I think that would be the case with most people," Chuck said. "Of course, it could always be fun to watch him be miserable in his marriage because he was away from you."

"Hmm.. so which would be crueler," Helen pondered. "A relatively quick, if painful, death or a long drawn out and miserable life?"

Hurley was kinda aghast. "...lady," Hurley said. "If she really loved him, she wouldn't kill him."

"Yeah, seriously," Tony said. "Unless she was psycho, which with her dad, who knows?"

"Yeah, but... I'd like to think people would choose the non-killing option," Hurley said.

"I don't think there should be a killing option at all," Tony said. "But then, maybe that's disrespectful of other cultures." Yeah, still a little cranky about the argument he'd had with Leto on Saturday and he didn't care if certain other students in class overheard him say this.

"Dude, I totally agree," Hurley said. "I mean, about no killing option. But everyone keeps telling me I'm naive and stuff when I say that."

"It's not naive to want it," Tony said. "To expect it, maybe, but what the hell's wrong with wanting people to be decent?"

Hurley shrugged. "Beats me. But I guess people might get cynical and stuff if they've done some of the... killing and stuff."

Leto heard that. He couldn't help it. And he rolled his eyes. He might have to blame Arthur for that reaction, as it was probably contagious.

Joan tried to decide which door she would pick.

Marco considered the question for all of a minute. "The Lady."
