Phys Ed: Week 11, Period 1 (Fri. 3/27)

This week, there was no gymnasium in the Danger Shop; just an alien pier overlooking blue water and a clear sky. On the floor of the pier were large rectangular spans of green, each with a single tee and a full bucket of golf balls. Off to the side were golf bags filled with all the clubs students could possibly need.

"Today, we're golfing," Ronon announced when most had assembled for class. More accurately, they were driving golf balls. He picked up a club and stepped up to a green patch where a ball was teed and ready to go. "Just swing and hit the ball. The goal's to send your ball farther than everybody else's." Ronon proceeded to demonstrate, swinging the club with one hand and sending the ball flying out into the ocean. "Find a partner and make it a competition. Go."

Gavin thought this looked easy. Take a club, hit a ball, success. So, he took a few whacks.

He missed the first time, dribbled it the second before finally nailing it the third.

Not dirty.

So it was a stick that was shaped differently than the one Reno normally swung around. It took him a few practise swings to get the feel for the length and the added weight at the end, but after he managed that? He was handling it like he'd handle his stun baton.

With oddly efficient reckless abandon, mostly.

Anemone liked the stick. It had a good weight to it, and it was fun to swing around.

Which is why she was tossing balls in the hair, hitting at them like a baseball bat. The 'twack' and follow-through of the club when she managed to hit them was immensely satisfying.

It took Annja a few tries, but she finally managed to make the balls go where she wanted them to go.

There were a couple of times that she considered just picking them up and throwing them or hitting them in the air.

She was good at that.

Jack squared away, took a practice swing, and nailed the thing...off to the left. Okay. Try two: Less to the left. Try three: Now it was going off to the right.

Okay, so Claire's brain decided this was an excellent time for her to "see" her dad again. There Nathaniel Fisher was -- also, for some strange reason, in a gym uniform -- hanging out and offering golfing advice.

"I do not swing like a girl," Claire muttered.

Adam was sorely tempted to hit the golf ball like a baseball. He resisted the temptation and took a couple of practice swings, before going for the real thing.

It actually ended up going where he wanted. Success.

Molly fumbled the club initially, but eventually got a secure grip. She stroked a couple of times for practice. When it came time to deal with the ball, she aimed carefully and tapped gently. When a harder stroke was required, what she lost in precision she made up in power.

It really was a beautiful pier. But standing there and just staring was probably going to get her a lecture from Worf, so she set a ball. Just sending it off into the ocean, though, really wasn't very satisfying.

"Maybe if there were jumping fish," she mused. "Jumping fish that tried to snatch the ball as it flew past..."
