The tables in the art room were covered in small bins of different kinds of stone, metal and plastic beads, wire, different colors of silk cord, and the fastenings needed to turn these things into necklaces and bracelets.

"Hey," Claire announced, once she realized everybody was there and looked up from her attempt at a fake-amber-and-silver bracelet. "We're making jewelry today. I got some directions off the Internet, but it's kind of not rocket science."

"Anyhow, while we're working we have to talk about the Art Crawl thing next month. It's April 15-16, so we need ..." she looked at her notebook. "Somebody to talk to the music club about DJing or playing, somebody to talk to Geoff at the theater about if the cast wants to perform, people to get the art together, somebody to make the advertising posters and hang them up, and people to clean the warehouse out before the show. There's a sign-up sheet going around, so please let me know what you can do so I don't go insane. And I think that's it."

"Yeah, but art people go nuts and paint with their own blood then go to bed for a week," Claire wildly overgeneralized. "Drama people go nuts and make sure everybody they ever met, ever, knows they're all wounded and wacky and crazy."

"So art people are more subtle," said Cal. "Drama people are...dramatic, go figure. Us writer people have it best. We just put it all into the page."

"Right, and whatever you do, it just kind of goes with the artistic temperament," Claire nodded. "Maybe I should start writing, except all my writing is really lame."

"You should write something," Cal nodded, "and then we'll see if it's as lame as you say it is."

"It'll be all 'woe is me, blah blah blah,' " Claire warned. "Not as good as your story."

She shrugged, though, curious about the challenge. "I'll bring you something Friday at the diner?"

Cal grinned a little. "That's what half my stuff is, too, you know. And you liked that story? Really?"

"I thought I told you, yeah," Claire answered. "It was romantic but not gooey, right? And I liked how you wrote aabout the cholera."

"Couldn't let them have a happy ending," Cal said with a faint grin.

"I can't imagine you writing a happy ending," Claire said, with her own tiny smile.

"Good," Cal grinned back. "Happy endings are boring."

And entirely unrealistic.
