Phys Ed: Week 10, Period 1 (Fri. 3/20)

"Football," Ronon announced once students had arrived in the gym, tossing a ball between his hands, "is some great legendary game on Earth. People sing tributes to it and collect videos of important games. They also wear full body armor to protect from death by leather. I still say Earth is weird."

"The computer said I should call it American Football since we're playin' with our hands, not our feet. Also, the ball's not round. Helps it get better lift and speed." Ronon went on to demonstrate how to properly throw and catch a football.

He gestured to the bins of footballs and gear. "Get your uniform, a ball, and practice throwing the ball to a partner."

Claire watched him for a moment before approaching. "So would you mind a partner who's never played football before?"

"Not at all," he said, tucking the ball under one arm. "I haven't really played much either. But, I think the two of us could manage a game of catch."

"I promise I won't go all meta Brady Bunch on you if it hits my nose," Claire offered, taking a couple steps backward. "I'm Claire, by the way."

She'd seen him around -- actually, she thought she'd seen two of him -- but she didn't think they'd done the introductions thing.

"Gavin," he said, taking a few steps of his own back. "Nice to meet you." He tossed the football lightly, watching it wobble in the air. "And I dunno if I even know what that means so it's appreciated."

"It's this old TV show where this pretty blond girl gets bonked in the nose and freaks," Claire explained, holding out her hands to catch the football. "Not important. Nice to meet you, too."

"We didn't get that where I'm from," he said and laughed. "Television's sort of a new thing for me. We had one but not with this type of...entertainment, I guess. Lots to choose from here."

Claire tossed the football back at him, the throw going low to the ground. "I'm trying not to watch so much," she said. "it's really, really easy to just waste time that way, y'know?"

Gavin scooped up the football before it bounced and said, "It is. I've gotten addicted to a lot of the different news networks. We only have one or two of those back home. There's so many different places to get different opinions."

He tossed the ball back, watching ti flail end over end and to the right.

Claire had to move fast to catch the ball, and it spiraled off her fingertips and bounced before she scooped it up and tossed it back to Gavin on an angle. "Do you go online?" she asked. "That's where you find the really insane conspiracy theories and all of that."

"That I haven't done," he said, shifting to the left and barely snagging it with a hand. "Is there any merit in them or is it just people making stuff up to scare others?"

"Mostly the second thing," Claire said, stepping to the left to get into position. "Like, people take one tiny true thing and then pour on extra crazy sauce."

"Just for fun, huh?" Gavin asked, shaking his head. "We've got rumor mongers. Spreading untruths just because they're bored or something."

"So, people kinda suck everywhere," was Claire's summary. "And then other people believe whatever they hear and don't take a second to ask a question."

"Vicious cycle," he agreed. "But, then, if they weren't there, things might get a little stagnant. Need a little pot stirring, I guess."

"Yeah, but then sometimes it goes insane and it's hard to calm everybody down," Claire countered.

"Well, yeah, and that does tend to happen," he said, shrugging. "I don't think there's a happy medium when it comes to gossip either. It's just one of those there things that we all have to deal with at one point or another."

Pause.

"Which bites."
