Heroing [Period 2, Class 10]

"Hello!" Captain Hammer boomed happily, as he'd hidden away from the tiny children this weekend and thus not had to deal with that little element of insanity. He was, of course, wonderful with children, but they tended to cling and drool and vomit on things.

"Every hero," he said thoughtfully, pacing, "needs to learn to act less as a vigilante, at some point, and more in cooperation with the law enforcement. Those boys -- and ladies," he added, because he was sensitive, "in blue are important to running the city, and you have to keep that in mind when you're saving the day. Now, back home, the cops love me. There's a fan club." He posed, because...well, that was what he did. "But it isn't that way for all heroes! I've heard about people who have been outlawed from being heroes in their cities, because the police didn't enjoy their brand of justice. And sometimes, heroes can be branded as villains themselves, simply because sometimes we have to break the law to enforce it!"

"Your job today is to have one of those 'class discussion' things on how to keep the police happy and adoring you, because heroes often have to act outside the letter of the law, even while keeping the spirit of it," Hammer said, nodding. "Talk about what..." He consulted his notes for this word "...ethical issues you might have, with acting outside the law. Who's got the authority? The heroes, or the police, when it comes down to it?"

This wasn't a topic that meant anything to Arthur at all.

Actually, if you substituted 'police' with 'father', this topic was kind of the focal point of his life right now. He sat back and eyed Hammer as he talked.

Hannibal half listened to the lecture and half wondered about Hammer's fan club. That had to be...an insane bunch of people.

Manipulate the law?

Anemone slouched in her chair and glared down at her desk. Easy. Far too easy, and she didn't really like thinking about what happened the last time a 'hero' manipulated the army's goodwill to give himself the power needed to enact 'justice'.

Outside law enforcement? The concept was wholly new to Adora and she paid rapt attention.

Tahiri slouched down in her chair, looking mildly annoyed at the topic.

The people styling themselves law enforcement back home these days, or at least one group of them, were so not on her list of favorite people.

Romeo listened skeptically. The letter of the law was not the best friend of any Montague, and Romeo was no exception.

Ben was reminded by the lecture that he probably needed to get in touch with his friend Lon Shevu with the GAG.

...not a conversation he was looking forward to.

Momoko listened, but wasn't sure how this applied to her. Being in the employ of the city meant she technically was law enforcement, didn't it?

"Try not to hurt people or damage property?" Hannibal suggested. "Cops seem to really be opposed to that."

"The authority lies with the..." he did not hesitate on the word, "Police. It shouldn't be fought unless there's a very good reason. You can't just disobey on a whim, but you also can't sit by when men's lives are at stake."

"Not trying to arrest me for murder would be a good start," Tahiri muttered.

Someone hadn't forgotten about Eriadu yet.

"Sometimes things simply need to be done which the average law enforcement is not prepared to deal with," helen said, thinking of when the Homeward Bounders had gone up against Them. "And then one must do what one needs to do to protect the rest."

Sokka raised a hand. "In our theoretical example, how corrupt are the police, and how injust are the laws?" It was an important question, especially for someone who was planning on taking down a head of state.

"If the police are useful, you shouldn't have to go outside the law to enforce it, and if you do, then the good cops will be trying to get around the laws just the same," Jess said.

"Clearer job descriptions, maybe? We should really work together. The police are well-trained to fight crime and uphold the law and they're good at it, but," Momoko was thinking this through.

"If a giant evil robot comes walking into town destroying entire buildings and stomping on cars and throwing trains around? Yelling that he's under arrest really won't work, so the police would be better off trying to keep everyone safe and rescuing the citizens while we defeat the robot. But if a bank is being robbed by a street gang, us getting involved could mess up an entire year's worth of undercover work or something and at the least cause a lot of unnecessary property damage!"

Adora was scanning the class for any students who looked particularly mop-headed or like they would cry when kicked. She was starting to wonder if she'd be successful ever.
