"Welcome back," Steve said. "I hope you all enjoyed your break, and that everyone is minus any new regrets and not too horribly sunburnt. Today I'd like to talk about peer pressure. Peer pressure is a terrible thing. You're sitting there, minding your own business, and then your so-called 'friends' tell you 'everyone else is doing it' or 'you'll be a loser if you don't,' and the next thing you know you're wearing a suit that cost more than should ever be spent on clothes and fighting a Nazi made out of bees in the middle of a Las Vegas casino. So it's bad, is what I'm saying. Don't do it. And when people try it on you, whether they're trying to get you to have sex or get a tattoo or buy stupidly expensive clothes or register with the government, tell them to get lost.

"Your assignment for today is to resist peer pressure. You can get into pairs or groups, whatever works well for you, and one of you will resist peer pressure applied by the others, who are trying to convince you to eat a bacon cookie. Have fun."

Priestly was chewing. Not that he had any food in his mouth, he was just . . . chewing. He held a plate with some of the cookies out towards Liir. "Cookie?" he asked, as though his mouth was full.

"...I actually like the cookies. But for the sake of the exercise, however, no thank you."

Priestly shrugged, still chewing, withdrew the plate of cookies, and immediately turned around to talk to someone else.

He quirked his lips and wondered if.

"Have you had one?" he asked.

"Because they're actually rather good. The bacon works nicely, gives it a saltiness..."

Priestly glanced back. "So you do want one."

"No, because the object is not to have one. But they are good. You should have one."

"Right. And you do everything people tell you to." Priestly rolled his eyes slightly and turned to wander off again.

"Why not?"

He didn't always, but if it sounded like a good idea, he did.

Priestly sighed and turned. "Why not what?"

"Why not do what people tell you? They might know something you don't. So if you don't see anything objectionable in the requestion, why not?"

"You don't see anything objectionable about being told not to eat a cookie that you think is really good?"

"I said you should eat it. Because it's really good."

"Right. So it's good. And I should have one. But you won't because you're not supposed to. That makes sense."

"Well, you can tell me that I should some more, because it is good, but I won't because we're not supposed to.

"I've seen bees kill people, after all."

...it's only sort of a nonsequitor.

"But you're totally fine with telling me to break the rules. Dude, that's screwed up."

"I don't quite understand the point of the exercise, I think," he admitted, "but I thought that was what we were supposed to do."

"The exercise is dumb. Cookies aren't exactly like drugs or smoking or anything. Plus, this? Totally not how peer pressure really works."

"Not at all. Even I know that."

He sighed.

"How was your vacation?"

Priestly smiled. "It was pretty sweet. I'm already missing the weather."

He scratched behind one ear.

"Amber said the same. It should be summer soon enough, I think. I'd hate to miss spring."

"Spring's cool. But I think I kinda hate winter."

"It's not my favorite either. I hate the cold. I'm just glad there's so many carpets here, really. Stone is terrible when it's cold."

Priestly made a face. "Ugh. Yeah, I can imagine."

"But we're already in... it's March, isn't it?"

Which he thought was a funny name.

"And the boat did it's job thawing us all, I should think. Did you go onto the islands at all?"

"Of course, man. Gotta take advantage of time to explore, like that."
