Library; Monday [ 02/09 ].

Well, then.

This weekend had been interesting. Cal's alarm clock had somehow, miraculously, still managed to have gone off this morning so that he could make it into the library on time, clinging to his coffee. It wouldn't matter how much of it he managed to suck down. There was nothing that was likely to shake him out of the daze he was in.

Post-surgery. Whatever it was that happened this weekend, that was him. If he'd decided to go with the surgery instead of running away from Dr. Luce's office that fateful morning.

It was a hell of a lot to swallow, so hopefully, there wasn't a lot to do today because he doubted he was going to be able to do anything but sit and stare in astonishment for a while.

...he had to find out whoever that was making that documentary. Had to.

"The guy with the cape almost had Merlin's doofy ears, too," Cal recalled. "Almost. And, yeah, probably. I'm sure they survived. Strapping young lads they are."

Claire snorted at the wording on that, though she didn't disagree, and repeated, " 'Strapping young lads.' "

Cal shrugged. "It sounded British-y."

"Yeah, but, just ... 'strapping.' " That time she said it in a British accent. "It's just a funny word."

"I'd cite the exact definition," Cal offered, "but I don't know it."

"Whatever, it's random and British," Claire decided, looking around at the books. "Oh! You just reminded me of one other random weird thing. Who works in the library Sundays?"

Cal had to take a moment to remember. "Guy with the arms," he said. "In newspaper with me..."

What was his name?

"Lee. Why?"

"Because whoever was in here yesterday was using the library as his personal gym," Claire said. "He was some boxing guy, Apollo something. He gave me his autograph and told me he liked to make girls cry."

There was a long pause.

Followed by what could really only be considered a laugh, which was nice. It was kind of good to laugh. "What? Are you serious?"

"My hand to god," Claire said. "It was insane. Poor Claire wanted to use the library phone and she found this huge guy working out."

"I was noticing," Cal said, chuckling as he wondered if he could keep a straight face around Lee now at the newspaper meeting, "that there's a faint mixture of sweat in the air, along with the books."

Claire breathed in deeply, as if appreciating it. "Mmmm. Eau de locker room."

"Uggh!" Cal's face twisted into an expression as if Claire had done the most disgusting thing imaginable, which might have more power if he wasn't laughing while he did. "Gross! I didn't realize you were into big, sweaty guys. What do you keep me around for, so you've got something to throw at them to break in half?"

"Yes," Claire said, with a straight face. "Apollo and me, we're gonna run off right after I give you that makeover. That cool?"

"I knew it!" Cal said, hand over his heard as though wounded. "But that's fine. At least then I'll be all made-over so that I can find someone new and move on. The guy in the cape did say that if I were more into killing people, he'd let me in on his taking over the world thing."

"Well, see, killing people," Claire said, waving a hand. as if to dismiss it entirely. "If you get over that and join with cape guy, maybe he'll let you wear a cape too."

They needed to stop talking about guys in capes, but then Cal remember that he was the one who brought it up.

Damn it.

"I can only hope."

"Right," Claire said, with a reluctant glance at the clock. "Um. So. So I should maybe get to class, huh?"

"Ugh, class," Cal said, glancing toward the clock as well and making a slight face at it, although there was still a good chance that Claire's class might draw her back in again. He could be hopeful right?

"I guess so. But I'll see you later, for club, and that back massage later. But only if it's still bothering you."

That last bit was added so he didn't sound too desperate.

"It probably will be," Claire said, grimacing as she stretched out her spine. "And, um, I wouldn't turn down a backrub from you even if it felt okay."

Cal felt like he shouldn't have let that make him grin as much as it did, but, at the same time, it wasn't like he could help it. "Good. I'll see you later, then?"
