You have the freedom to say whatever you want, but I expect it to be done well. Use ethos, pathos, and logos. Ok, brainstorm, and I'll be walking around to give you help. Go.

Listen up. Families. What can we say. The accepted theory is that the family unit that is pleasing to us is a microcosm of the social structure...likewise, society is a macrocosm of family. Keeping this in mind...and moving away from the self into the hypothetical, lets talk dysfunction. [Writes DYSFUNCTION on the board] This means literally "to not work" but has many interpretations. We're going to figure it all out today...[flatly] then you'll be the smartest class in the school. Ok, go. Talk. Or I'll set fire to the room.

Chip...you're in deep shi--trouble. I need to talk to you out in the hall.

[She leans forward, less than a foot from his face, her voice dropping to a chilling hush]

Cut it, Jack. I'm not stupid. Just because I find you remarkably charming doesn't mean you get to disrespect me. You want influence, you want control? You want power? You've never seen it like you're about to.

There's fine balance here, Harkness. I'm your teacher. I'm not your friend. I'm not your tall red lily. I've worked very hard to get to where I am. Maybe when you've proven to me you can do something more than smirk and act like a jackass, I'll give you more respect. as it is right now...I'm coming down on you like a ton of bricks.

I haven't disobeyed you, I haven't challenged you in class... okay, the marriage proposal wasn't exactly dignity-enhancing, but hey, it was more about my loss of dignity than yours. By the way, the marriage proposal? Is withdrawn.

All you've got on me is a certain snide tone of voice -- which, I suppose you could give me detension for but I'd really rather you didn't -- and the fact that I no longer slavishly follow what you tell me to do. Which is what you wanted, right?

[Her voice snaps back to hard and cold] See...better than you. And yeah...you're right. I don't want you to slavishly follow me. I want you to learn something about yourself. I get the distinct feeling that what you learned on Friday is clouding your judgement. You don't like something about yourself. Fine. Change it. But do not think I'm not going to call you on it.

[A wicked gleam appears in her eyes and creeps down her face, forming a half smile] In fact...I don't think detention is quite what you need. I think you need to spend some quality time with me. Oh yeah...all kinds of possibilities for helping you there.

Remember when you said if there was anything you could do for me...anything at all? Remember that promise...Chip?

God no...not here in the hallway. I'm going to the Perk after school to see Shane. Meet me there...I'll buy you a cup of coffee. And bring your A game. [Her smile still wicked, takes his face in her hands and brushes a kiss against his cheek] I'm glad we had this little talk, Chip. It just isn't good for friends to fight.

[She turns and walks back into class to get on with the discussion]
