Food Appreciation [Class Four, Period #3]

Marshall was just kind of staring at everybody when class started. He didn't look angry or anything. He was just staring, maybe looking a bit worried.

A little more staring.

"I'M AFRAID TO TALK TO EVERYBODY TODAY," he said suddenly. "So far today I told a radio squirrel that if I were another squirrel I'd totally tap that and I told Ted that I didn't really mind his red cowboy boots!"

Ignore the fact that nobody here knew who Ted was.

"What if I start doing lecture and I suddenly start talking about how I think Kaylee's little accent is about the cutest thing I've ever heard and how that sometimes I want to ruffle Sam's hair because it looks fun?" Marshall's eyes widened. "Oh god, I'm doing it already!"

He pointed at the buffet table which had all sorts of ~~moddable~~ sandwiches and subs on them.

"Sandwiches! They're delicious and easy to make! Eat them!" Marshall said. "And for the love of god, someone save me from myself!"

"Dude," Priestly said, 'cause he was way observant. "You're not eating."

"My last class made me feel fat," Hurley said. "And normally, I just... eat when that happens? But there was a giant slug thing that kinda made me nauseous."

Wow, that was some honesty, there.

"So you eat when you're depressed? I totally nearly went the eating disorder route when I started playing football. It's part of the reason I dropped the team and went punk instead."

Whyyyyyyy was he saying that? Moving back to safer territory!

"Giant slug?"

"Yeah. He was an alien thing," Hurley said. "Huge and fat and... disgusting."

"So there are things on this island that aren't totally hot." Priestly'd been beginning to wonder. "What class was that?"

"Oh, it was a simulation," Hurley said. "It wasn't really. And it was Ethics class."

"The ethics of fat alien worm things?"

"He said it was to show us what happens when gluttony runs wild," Hurley said. "But all it did was... make me self conscious, I guess."

"You're not a worm thing," Priestly said. "You're totally cool. I mean, yeah, you could totally stand to lose some weight. Maybe even a lot of weight." What the hell was he saying? He didn't say things like this to people! "But you gotta be who you are first, right?"

"Man, I know I could lose some weight. I know every day I get winded going up a flight of stairs, dude. But dude, I gotta have a reason to lose weight and I don't care about myself enough to do that," Hurley said.

"Why not? If nothing else, you've got great hair. And hey, if you lose a little, you might decide you like yourself a little better and can lose more?"

He should be a motivational speaker, he should.

"Dude, it's just... too hard, you know?" Hurley said. "It's easier to just let myself be this way. And... food is too good to diet."

"Food is good, yeah, but so is, like, running."

"It's not that easy, dude," Hurley said. "I want to stop, sometimes. But I can't."

It didn't take a genius to figure out that Priestly didn't quite understand that. Yeah, he wasn't as in shape as he'd ever been, but he'd never been anywhere near as out of it as Hurley.

"But . . . running. And jumping around and dancing and playing ball and you don't do any of that stuff?"

"Dude, I play basketball," Hurley said. "And ping pong. I don't just sit around all day. I just eat... a lot."

"A whole lot," Priestly said, a little incredulously. "And, wow, I sound like a complete ass. I'm sorry, man."

"Dude, I normally wouldn't talk back," Hurley said. "Something weird's going on."

"No kidding, man. At least it's not just me."

"Yeah, just... do me a favor and forgot that stuff," Hurley said. "Please?"

"I can't, man. But I'm not gonna tell anyone else about it. Unless they ask. Today. God I hope this only lasts today. Or just till the end of class would be nice."

"I was doing it in the last class, too," Hurley admitted.

"You were telling people about your eating disorder?"

"No, just... telling people stuff that I wouldn't, normally," Hurley said.

"Oh. 'Cause, you know, it might help if you talked to someone about it. Who's not me."
