Sex Ed, Monday [2-2] Third Period

"Let's talk about pregnancy," Steve said, beaming at his class. "Pregnancy is how--barring crazy witches or mad scientists--new life is created. Now, half of you--again, barring crazy witches or mad scientists--will never be pregnant. For that, you should thank your God. Yes, it is a miraculous process, but it is not a fun process, and definitely not one that should be undertaken by teenagers. Ahem."

"Generally speaking, women are able to conceive around five days per twenty-eight day menstrual cycle." Why yes, Steve was turning quite pink. "As I mentioned previously, if you're pre-modern, your best bet as far as birth control goes is to figure out when those days are using a fertility chart and avoid intercourse during that period. Now we're going to watch a short film on conception."

Once the film was over, Steve continued talking. "Some early indicators of pregnancy include a missed period, swollen or tender, um, breasts, fatigue, morning sickness, which can actually happen at any time of the day, and needing to um, urinate often. There are other possible explanations for all of these symptoms, but if you're experiencing more than one of them, it might be a good idea to purchase a pregnancy test or make an appointment with your doctor. As soon as you find out you're pregnant, it's important to stop smoking and drinking alcohol and, horrifying as this may sound, cut out caffeine.

"Pregnancy is generally divided into three three-month periods, or trimesters. During the first trimester, all of the indicators of early pregnancy mentioned above are experienced, along with mood swings, headaches, backaches, and food cravings--hence the stereotype of 'pickles and ice cream.' During the second trimester some of those symptoms will go away, to be replaced by the abdomen expanding, which changes balance, and shortness of breath. The third trimester basically entails walking around with a watermelon strapped to your stomach while suffering from heartburn, sore feet, and hemorrhoids. At the end of it you do get a baby, though. Gentlemen, your role during all of this is to do whatever the woman wants you to do. Full stop. Now we're going to watch the least horrifying video about childbirth I could find."

When the video was complete, Steve said, "You're welcome to take the rest of the class to discuss why you're absolutely not going to become teen pregnancy statistics."

Dinah was shaking her head, wincing. "How many forms of birth control can you use at the same time?"

Not that she had a reason to worry. But still.

Priestly raised a teasing eyebrow at her. "You got some extracurriculars planned I should know about?"

"No!" Dinah blurted, then laughed. "No plans, nothing in the works! Sheesh. I just.. you know. Someday." The blushiness was starting to fade a little, but she gave the screen another distrustful look.

"Okay," Priestly said with a laugh of his own. "Just, you know, let me know. In case I need to defend your honor."

Dinah chortled. "I can defend my own! But thanks?" She grinned, then teased, "Anyone I should be defending your honor from any kind of paternity suit?"

[and I go away for a few! SP, I hope]

"Any girl trying to blame me for her getting knocked up is hallucinating." Priestly folded his arms on his desk and leaned forward. "And I know you can do it. But it's more fun if I do."

"Oh really?" Dinah snickered. "Fun for you, I'm guessing? How so? They look worse when you beat them when I do?" Shyeah, right.

"Hey," Priestly raised his hands. "I'm just saying, you're my friend, so I'm gonna defend your honor. Whether you can do it yourself or not."

"And I am totally up for that, if I get to defend you too," Dinah said, smiling. "I'm learning to use a sword!" Girlfriends of Priestly, be aware.

A sword?

Priestly just figured he'd hit people. Maybe. He wasn't actually a huge fan of hitting people.

Maybe he could tackle them and yell a bit and then get punched and go down like a total wuss so his aging hippie boss can come out and open a can of whoopass instead.

"Yeah, that's what friends do, right?"

Tackling would be cool! Dinah could cheer for that, if it ever had reason to happen. And the aging hippie boss was made of win, so even more yay!

"Exactly." She bounced on her chair. "Although let's hope for no babies and no reasons to be beating on people." She bit her lip. "Um, you might want to pass some of the info in here along to Edward, though. Someone asked him 'back to her room' Friday night? And he had to ask me why. I'll defend his honor too, but..."

Priestly laughed softly. "Wow, that'll be the world's most awkward conversation, ever. But, uh, yeah, okay. Though I'm pretty sure if a girl ever tried anything, Ed'd probably burst into song and scare her off. . . ."

"Probably, yeah," Dinah said ruefully. Which was a lot of what kept her from letting Edward get to her... too much. "And he was pretty drunk, and told her he was with you? So some girl out there might think you guys are dating. But, I figure, if he at least knows more than what he got from lesbian porno," and oh look, there's the blush that was hiding, "Um, he'll ... yeah. Sorry? It just can't be me! He gets all flaily!"

"He might flail at me, too," Priestly pointed out. "And, great. Gay rumors will go real well with the whole 'I thought you were engaged' thing I got my second week here."

"Sorry. I'll tell her you're totally not-- it's Adora?-- if I get a chance to talk to her." She frowned. "Or would that be way too pushy? Eeek."

"I think we can probably wait to see if she's actually spreading any rumors before we jump in with protesting. That would just look kinda . . . weird."

Re: Discuss!

[identity profile] blondecanary.livejournal.com 2009-02-02 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
"Heh. Yeah. And I won't tell her to go easy on Edward until or unless he ... decides to follow up on that." Which was all kinds of weird to think about, because to Dinah, Edward was about thirteen and should not be thinking about sex. Except he was a really hot thirteen, and wow, did that make her feel wrong. "Good luck?" She grinned. "I guess you could send him to Mr. Rogers, worst case scenario."
