Child Development- 1st Period- Class #4

"Morning, everyone," Lily greeted the students after the bell. "I'm sure everyone'll be glad to know that this week there are no crying babies, though I know you all loved and adored them. This week we're going to get a little more into the psychology of things by talking about birth order.

"Alfred Adler was the first person to really put forward the theory that your chronological place among your siblings would have a strong effect on your personality," she went on, passing out this week's handouts. "Which it probably can. I mean, if you're the firstborn and are like, seven years old before you get that little brother or sister you spent years asking Santa for, you're going to have some really different experiences than that sibling who's got an older brother or sister to deal with, especially if you suddenly figure out you really would have rathered Santa gave you a bike instead.

"It's also not an exact science. Like I've been saying about development, everyone's going to be unique. And sometimes there are extenuating circumstances. Now we have blended families. People have stepbrothers and stepsisters, half-siblings... Sometimes they might live with their dad while their siblings live with their mom. And then you have a long time between siblings sometimes. Some people will say that if you have one kid, and then your second ten years or more later, you might as well just lump them in with only children. It's all a fun socio-familial...thing." She paused. "Which is a word I think I just made up, don't write that down."

"Unless your parents aren't royal. And then he's just a pain in the ass to the second born," John grinned.

"Greeting's John!" he exclaimed cheerfully.

"This 'pain in the ass' it is meta... metop... metoc... just an expression?"

"Exactly, Edward," John confirmed. "Though at times the figurative can be literal. It all depends on the weapons used in a fight."

"Awkward," he said. "I've yet to stab a man in the ass! There is no honor in ass-stabbing. Have you?"

John laughed, "No, but my brother and I never fought with swords."

Amazing.

"If not the sword, then what do you use?"

"Mostly our fists," John admitted. "I guess only children don't get into the whole wrestling thing?"

"Fists! Ah, yes," he stated, holding up two manly fists. "But what is this wrestling?"

"You know, you use your whole body to try to pin your opponent to the ground," he explained. "There are rules in the sport version, not so much with brothers."

"I did not know!" he exclaimed, brightly. "I should like to try this, perhaps with Lee!" Because no one else has challenged him yet!

John grinned. "Good luck beating him. I've seen that guy's arms." He'd also held had a battle of wills with him and yeah, tough kid.

"Hm, I should have to learn this wrestling first before I can beat Lee's arms." Yes, Prince Edward had noticed Lee's arms too. "Where may I learn this wrestling?"

"Uh, maybe that PE class or the internet would help," John offered. "You could always deck your roommate and see what happens." Good advice.

"I don't have an internet, John. In fact, I don't have a net of any kind. But I did get a job!" he cheered.

Then, "Deck my roommate? As in, swing my fist? Would I then be wrestled?"

John nodded, "Depending on who your roommate is."

Edward scratched his head. "I seem to keep missing him." Which was entirely odd, wasn't it? "I could deck you?" he suggested, grinning.

"Sure," John replied, sizing him up. "If you think you could take me."

"Ahhh, I don't want to take you anywhere, John! But I should like to learn to wrestle you!"

Prince Edward glanced at the teacher, then back to John. "Wrestling in class is fine, yes?"

"Sure," John smiled. "You don't mind the possibility of getting detention, do you?"

He gasped.

"Detention! I've had this and while I do not understand it's meaning, it was oddly enjoyable!"

Prince Edward stood. "Prepare yourself for my decking, John! Ah-hah!"
