Sex Ed, Monday [1-26] Third Period

Today a large poster was displayed at the front of the classroom. "I would just like to start by saying I had nothing to do with the creation of this poster," Steve said, looking faintly embarrassed about it. "But it has an important message. You can't always tell by looking at someone whether they have a venereal disease or not. They may not even know it. That's why protection is so important, and why abstinence is the only really effective way of preventing the spread of disease. Today we're going to have a little exercise to demonstrate this.

"You have the rest of the class period free to mingle and eat these cookies I brought. There is only one requirement: you must shake hands with anyone you talk to. And there is a catch. One of you is--hypothetically, of course--carrying a disease, which is transferred by the shaking of hands. I will tell you who at the end of the period. But don't worry about that for now. Chat. Enjoy the cookies."

((Edit: Disease vector revealed!))

"I was admitted to the school by a friend of my family's, and I assure you, he received a very strongly worded letter." At least, she'd sent a letter. Whether or not it had made it to Gandalf remained to be seen. "I am hopeful that this class is not what he expected, and reassured that others seem just as uneased by the subject matter as myself."

Dinah nodded vigorously. "I mean, it's not like it's all new information, I got the basics when I was 12, but... It's a lot more embarrassing with guys in the room," she added, her voice getting lower. And so not looking at Priestly.

Okay, maybe for a second.

Éowyn was just as emphatic when she nodded. "The boys make this much more difficult," she said, pausing for a moment and looking more embarrassed when she added, "I have never been told about any of this. Is that bad?"

"Bad?" Dinah frowned, then shook her head. "Not bad, just not typical? I mean, there's some people who's parents are kind of strict, or religious, and they don't want them hearing about this stuff at school, so. You're maybe not the only one." She smiled a little at Éowyn. "And that's probably why they have the class, but wow. It makes me want to never, ever do anything, every single Monday morning."

"I cannot imagine my uncle speaking to me about such things," Éowyn said. "It is possible that my brother knows what to do. He's older and more...experienced with people."

"My sisters know all this stuff. One of them was engaged, and I know they were... But, well. It just didn't come up?" Dinah facepalmed a little. "No, I wouldn't ask my brother either, if I had one!"

"It would be much easier if I had sisters," Éowyn said. "I have only men, and I believe they would be as mortified to explain as I would be to listen."

"Oh, wow," Dinah sympathized, then looked thoughtful. "The class is probably going to tell you more than you want to know. Or God, more than I want to know, but... is your Big Sib a girl? You could maybe ask her, if she is. Or me, if she isn't." She gave a wry smile. "Not that I am any kind of expert at all."

"I didn't think of asking Meg. She's my big sibling here," Éowyn explained. "I suppose I could ask her, but...well, I don't know if there will be a need for that any time soon." She couldn't help but glance around at the boys.

Dinah couldn't help but giggle at that. "Yeah. We did just get here a few weeks ago. I mean, a lot of the guys here are cool and cute, but that's... way down the line. You know?"

"Very, very far from now," Éowyn agreed. "No matter how handsome some of them are. Or prone to running around without their clothes."

"I know!" Dinah chortled, and counted off on her fingers. "I've seen, um... six guys shirtless so far? For different reasons? And wow, it's distracting."

Éowyn laughed, grateful that she wasn't alone. "It was understandable when the machines that wash clothes were...broken," she said, still certain that the fliers were a joke conjured by a bored student. "But there were boys running out in the snow! Nearly freezing! I wonder if perhaps they are all a bit mad, and that's why they're here."

"Ohhh, you met my Big Sib," Dinah said, fighting the urge to facepalm. "Yeah, Jamie, he's... um." She frowned. "He's brave and possibly crazy?"
