Sex Ed, Monday [1-26] Third Period

Today a large poster was displayed at the front of the classroom. "I would just like to start by saying I had nothing to do with the creation of this poster," Steve said, looking faintly embarrassed about it. "But it has an important message. You can't always tell by looking at someone whether they have a venereal disease or not. They may not even know it. That's why protection is so important, and why abstinence is the only really effective way of preventing the spread of disease. Today we're going to have a little exercise to demonstrate this.

"You have the rest of the class period free to mingle and eat these cookies I brought. There is only one requirement: you must shake hands with anyone you talk to. And there is a catch. One of you is--hypothetically, of course--carrying a disease, which is transferred by the shaking of hands. I will tell you who at the end of the period. But don't worry about that for now. Chat. Enjoy the cookies."

((Edit: Disease vector revealed!))

Priestly stuck mostly to the chocolate chip cookies. Not that he wasn't intrigued by the bacon ones, he just liked chocolate chip cookies. A lot.

He wondered if he'd get in trouble for wearing his gloves for the hand-shaking.

"Hi Priestly," Dinah wandered over, nibbling a cookie, then rolled her eyes and held out her hand for a handshake. "How've you been?"

Priestly shook her hand. "I'm okay. You?"

"Good! Were you still up for coffee later?" Dinah asked hopefully. "Maybe you could meet me at Luke's after classes? Lots to tell you. You could bring Ramone." She reconsidered. "On the other hand, it's Lacey's day there. Maybe not?"

"Yeah, she did seem to flip out a bit at the idea on the radio." Priestly shrugged. "Sounds good."

"Cool!" Dinah grinned at him, and bounced over to talk to someone else.

Priestly went back to pondering gloves and eating cookies.

"Theoretically," Alice said, "it might be the cookies carrying disease, and not the handshakes at all."

One must be on guard, against such things. Paranoia was justified when one was Queen.

"That'd be a bad metaphor, though," Priestly pointed out. "Unless he's actually trying to teach us that STDs, while rumored to be spread by sex, are actually spread by, like, hugging."

"One could possibly spread a particularly bad cold, by hugging," Alice mused. "Hugging someone with a cold might be more hazardous to one's health than sex with someone who hasn't anything at all."

She still couldn't quite say 'sex' without blushing. But it was a marked improvement, and only the faintest hint of color on her cheeks.

"But the point of the exercise is how you can't know for sure if someone has an STD or not, nothing to do with colds."

"We should have our own counterlesson," Alice suggested. "That colds are much more easily identifiable, and very annoying, so while you are avoiding the things that poster speaks of, do remember not to hug anyone with a cold. Unless they're terribly distraught and you're willing to take the risk."

"Figure out how to put all that into a catchy slogan, and we just might have a campaign."
