"Today we talk about envy," he said quietly. "There's always something that someone else seems to have that we want: clothing, grades, family, love, looks, acclaim...their achievements remind us of something we don't think we have enough of."

He began pacing as he warmed to his subject. "A wise man once said that envy is the art of counting the other person's blessings instead of your own. An entire industry has sprung up and flourished exploiting the idea that we envy those who have achieved fame." Anakin made a face. "With the equally charming dark side that we'll take joy in watching their failures."

He crossed his arms over his chest. "Normally that means that today we would start false rumors about people as an exercise in what not to do. If your voicemail was anything like mine on Sunday, though, you already have more than your fair share of factoids about your fellow students and teachers that ventured way over into the realm of oversharing."

He didn't make eye contact with Ino. "So today, pair up, talk about one of the messages you received that made you wonder something unflattering about a fellow member of Fandom, or one that made you defensive that someone might be believing a falsehood about you, and decide what you will do the next time the phones go insane." He smiled. "It's happened three times since I've been here, so there will be a next time."

"That's what my call to Dojima-san was 'bout," she confessed. "We're going to go there and insist we be allowed to use it the way it ought to be used and cry cultural discrimination if we can't. But, uh, yeah. If you didn't know that then the whole... getting naked at the hot spring sounds a lot dirtier, I think."

It really did.

"...yeah, that would," Hurley said. "It sounds... really dirty, actually. I hope no one mean got that message. Hopefully, like, someone understanding."

"I hope so ~~as the mun laughs~~," she said, playing with a bit of hair. "I mean, you agree, right? That in context it's a perfectly sensible message?"

"Totally," Hurley said. "I mean, it was about bathing and stuff. Nothing, raunchy or anything."

"But so easy to take wrong!" she laughed. "I'm not sure if I want to know who got it or not."

She mulled over it. "Worst thing is, so many people know what I sound like."

Hurley nodded. "Well, anyone gives you a hard time, I'll like... tackle them and make them apologize."

Awwww.

"I'll keep that in mind," she said, nodding and smiling. "Though, considering some of the other messages? I think I might get off fairly easy in comparison, really."

"Yeah," Hurley said. "Sorry if mine, like, offended you or anything."

She shrugged again.

"Just didn't like the assumptions in it. My first boyfriend was huge into pain." Oh, Kabuto.

"Dude, what?" Hurley said. This was not a concept he was familiar with.

"Pain appealed to him," she said slowly. "He liked getting hurt. It turned him on."

"...whoa," Hurley said, giving away the fact he'd not heard of his before.

"So, yeah," she said dryly. "It hit a bit close to home, your voicemail."

Hurley looked really sheepish. "Sorry, I... man, I suck."

"No, you don't." She shrugged. "I mean, I totally get it that it's so not everyone's thing? But just saying that no one ought to was a bit... much."

Especially when, while she was talking about Kabuto, Ino wasn't exactly adverse to a little bit of pain either. Kabuto just took it way way further than she did.

"I just thought... stabbing people was wrong," Hurley said. "I didn't even think people could like pain."

She was not going to laugh at him. She was not going to laugh at him. She was a ninja, come on.

"Stabbing people randomly can be wrong." Ino skipped to the next question. "And, admittedly, his taste in pain was a lot more than most people who like it--but there's a fair bit of people who like a little of it. The big key is, you know, making sure it's consensual."

Hurley nodded. "Guess I know better for next time."

She grinned. "Don't worry too much 'bout it, yeah? Just, you know, don't assume stuff either."

Never mind that she had assumptive tendencies herself. Shhh.

Hurley nodded. "Especially about that sorta thing. I should know better."
