Blank Page Art Club, Art Classroom, Monday, 1/19

Claire had been relieved to hear radio that morning. If the phones were screwy, it meant Cal probably hadn't intentionally not called her back.

She hoped.

She guessed she would find out during the meeting, anyhow. Right. She waited for most of the people who had signed up before starting to talk.

"Hey, I'm Claire. Thanks for signing up for this. It's really just to hang out and make stuff, and maybe we'll do an art show at the end of term if people are into it. I am way, way open to other ideas, though, so let me know if you have any.

"I was going to ask people to, like, bring something they were proud of to share today? But my phone was sort of blowing up at me yesterday so I never sent the email. So that's next week. This week, I got out all the drawing supplies" -- she gestured at a table heaped with pencils, crayons, ink and brushes, and other ~~moddable~~ media -- "so I thought we could just do that during the meeting. Maybe pair up and draw each other if you really feel creative? And like I said, next week we should each bring something and we can do show and tell."

"Oh, and Ms. Aldrin is our sponsor. She rocks."

Claire's mouth twitched in a smile. "Hey," she said in return. "I know. And it looks like people are having a good time and everything, right?"

Cal nodded. "Yeah. Interesting group. Kind of hard to think about anyone not having fun when all that's expected of them is to sit around and draw."

Which he meant as a compliment, for the record.

Claire took it as one.

"Yeah, it's not exactly algebra class," she agreed, then just looked at him. "So ... you didn't get my voice mail, did you?"

Cal shook his head a little, turning a faint shade of pink. "Not unless you're really good at disguising your voice," he said, wondering if he should mention his own voicemail that he could only assumed ended up misdirected.

Especially since he was try hard not to think about who it probably was misdirected to.

"That would be cool but it's not one of my gifts," Claire said. "it was nothing, anyhow. Just telling you I had a nice time Saturday." And the girlfriend thing, but she was chickening out of mentioning that for the moment. "I probably sounded like an idiot."

"...if it makes you feel any better," Cal said, figuring he might as well if, apparently, Claire had called about the same thing, "I probably sounded like an idiot in the message I sent you that said about the same thing and probably went to someone else who was really confused to get it."

"Or maybe really happy," Claire speculated. "Like, they might think they have a secret admirer."

of course she had to ruin it. "Or a stalker."

Not so much as ruined at as read Cal's mind. Especially since he wouldn't have been half surprised if stalker was what would come to Claire's mind if she actually had received it.

"Something like that," he agreed lightly, not about ready to say anything about his suspicions on where it went.

At least he hadn't randomly asked a teacher to be his boyfriend?

"Definitely," Claire agreed. "So were any of your other weird messages fun at all? I got the most random things, wharves and penguins and somebody lecturing me about how I talk to my mother."

A beat.

"That one might have been real. Oh, and I think one of your friends was all worried I'd hurt you or something."

"Not really," Cal said, almost disappointed. "Ino talking about the onsen, and some guy from paper talking about coming over, but I think he was trying to reach whoever is in 403."

Cal trailed off slightly, frowning thoughtfully.

"Which friend?"

Ino.

Had to be Ino.

Fanbutt would have just looked her over and made her feel all self-conscious like she'd done with Amber.

"She didn't say her name and I didn't know the voice," Claire said, fumbling for her phone and dialing in to voicemail. "Here (http://swipedthatfoot.livejournal.com/645.html?thread=66949#t66949), does that sound like anybody?"

"...That's Rikku," Cal said, after he'd listened carefully. He thought about it, then handed the phone back. "I'm pretty sure that's got to be for someone else, because we really don't even know each other beyond 'hey, what are you writing this week?' 'I'm thinking bananas.' 'Cool!'"

"I'm trying to remember if I know her," Claire mused. "But yeah, has to be for somebody else. I thought the thing about her being weird at work made no sense, too. I don't think I said anything too embarrassing when I tried to call back."

"I wouldn't worry about it," Cal said with a faint grin. "Even if it did get to Rikku, she'd probably be just as confused as you were."

"She did say she was nosy," Claire pointed out. "But ... probably not that nosy."

"Probably not," Cal laughed, just a little. "You want me to say anything to her?"

"Nah, if it really is for me she'll come find me," Claire dismissed. "And if it's not she'd just be all 'um' at us. So are you watching that show tonight?"

Cal scoffed. "No."

But he was bobbing his head up and down and trying to catch Claire's eyes.

Claire's eyes were caught, and she had to bite her lip to keep from laughing.

"Okay, so I might randomly happen to be on your floor and near the common room after dinner ..."

"I don't see why," Cal said, theatrically rolling his eyes. "It's not like anything will be going on, but it's your time, do with it what you will."

Claire rolled her eyes right back at him. "Yeah, fine, if I get bored playing solitaire online you might see me."

"I guess that'd be cool..."

"Yeah?" There was a smile at that before Claire resumed her air of vague boredom. "And if nothing's happening I'll just steal the good cereal and leave."

Cal's jaw dropped. "Not the good cereal!"

He might have even been planning to make sure all the good cereal was out of Claire's reach before she got there.

Claire just nodded, slow and dramatic.

The good cereal would not be safe!
