Blank Page Art Club, Art Classroom, Monday, 1/19

Claire had been relieved to hear radio that morning. If the phones were screwy, it meant Cal probably hadn't intentionally not called her back.

She hoped.

She guessed she would find out during the meeting, anyhow. Right. She waited for most of the people who had signed up before starting to talk.

"Hey, I'm Claire. Thanks for signing up for this. It's really just to hang out and make stuff, and maybe we'll do an art show at the end of term if people are into it. I am way, way open to other ideas, though, so let me know if you have any.

"I was going to ask people to, like, bring something they were proud of to share today? But my phone was sort of blowing up at me yesterday so I never sent the email. So that's next week. This week, I got out all the drawing supplies" -- she gestured at a table heaped with pencils, crayons, ink and brushes, and other moddable media -- "so I thought we could just do that during the meeting. Maybe pair up and draw each other if you really feel creative? And like I said, next week we should each bring something and we can do show and tell."

"Oh, and Ms. Aldrin is our sponsor. She rocks."

As much as yesterday had been pretty amusing, Angela was actually happy to do a bit of the more normal form of socialisation today. The face to face sort, where she might actually know who it was she was talking to. That was nice, too.

Angela poked through the stack of drawing implements for a pen that worked and felt comfortable to use. The comfort part was important when it came to these things.

She might've been running through potential sketch subjects as she did that.

Savannah dropped into a chair next to Angela. "I hate phones right now."

Savannah was relaxed and sketching away.

"You say anything you regret?" Angela asked.

Savannah shook her head. "You were the only person I called back," she said with a smile.

"And it actually got to me," Angela remarked. That was quite impressive, really. "So why do you hate them so much?"

Pssht, mingling. Katchoo was mostly only here because Claire had talked her into it.

Although talking to someone might be better for her than stewing over how the hell she'd ended up getting roped into a regular radio gig with that stupid ditz Lacey, or fuming over the phone system. (Or flailing over the phone system, in the case of that message from Francine, which she was now realizing was probably not meant for her, in which case it was right back to fuming.)

She'd gone for charcoals today; she liked charcoals. They were messy. Also, dark.

Doodles Cal could do. Doodles Cal was actually pretty decent at.

It was when he started to make them more than doodles that he got into trouble and realized he had no talent, so he was trying to keep it to a minimum. Mostly, he was drawing a lot of vague landscapes of Detroit and Detroit related things. Like cars.

Which lead to an eventual sketch of a car sinking into the broken ice of the Detroit River.

Oh, the ways his brain worked....

Yep, charcoals -- with lots of broad, rapid, almost haphazard smudging work with her fingers.

What was shaping up on Katchoo's paper was a very rough version of something that, with further work and done with colors, might end up looking like this (http://www.strangersinparadise.com/images/gallery/katchoo/sarasstare.jpg).

Katchoo could get shanghaied into it at some point, sure!
