Care for Magical Creatures; Friday, Period 2 [ 01/16 ].

Minsc had been very excited for this second class, even if, instead of massive desk destruction, he had learned his lesson and simply had all the chairs and desks shoved aside, opening up the space in the middle for the much more comfortable sitting and lounging pillows.

He was sitting at one end of the circle, legs folded, with a small brown box with holes punched in it in front of him, beaming. Once the class settled, he figured it was time to begin!

"Good morning, class!" he greeted them. "First of all, I regret to inform you that we're technically not supposed to destroy desks. So they're just moved. I know, I know. Not as fun, but they said next time they will take it out of my paycheck. And I need that so Boo and I can eat!"

"Secondly, I would like to announce that we are all very honoured and lucky to have amongst ourselves two individuals who I have deemed quite worthy of assisting me in this class. Lady Blysse and Prince Arthur will be your go-to people for this semester."

"Now! Last week was very interesting, as most of you seem to have either bad, negative, or displeased reactions to transformations, which makes this class very important! Today, we will discuss why anyone would want to transform. In my own experience, there are many reasons. Protection, camouflage, better fighting. Tell me, which is easier to do? Ripping out a man's throat with your bare hands...or ripping it out with actual bear hands? HMMMM? Think about it!"

"Today, I am also going to introduce you to a very special creature. Now, strictly speaking, this little guy in this box here is not a magical creature. There are variants of the species that are indeed magical, but one would be very hard to procure. However, this creature posesses such interesting transformation powers that he may as well be magical as is. Class, I'd like you to meet the chameleon."

Here, Minsc opened the box, which was filled with plenty of the little lizards. Persuaded by the ranger's silent encouragement, they inched forward tentatively, blinking their eyes and flicking their tongue and slowly starting to match the colourful patterns on the pillows. He certainly hoped no one was squeamish about reptiles! Especially since he might just laugh at them, since they were so little and harmless and cute.

"Watch them, see? They are transforming their appearance to blend in with their surroundings! They do this for two main reasons: one is for camouflage. Blending in like this, predators will find them very hard to...well, find! But there is another reason which might interest you all a bit more." Here, he chuckled. "They also change colours to help attract mates! Oh-la-la! The magical variety of chameleons actually have the ability to change into whatever they can, to fend off predators and otherwise benefit their lives! Such a simple transformation, but effective!"

At one point, Dōjima and her chameleon came over and sat down next to Reno.

"You!" she announced cheerfully, trying to disentangle the lizard from her hair. "What are you doing on Tuesday?"

"That," Reno nearly singsonged, "depends totally on if I get my clothes back anytime soon, zoto."

He still had clothes. Or, at least, he still had one blue pinstriped button-down, his wrist-band armor, and his hot-pepper boxer shorts and he was going to wear them all for all he was worth. That was besides the point.

"Why, you got somethin' in mind?"

Yurika covered her eyes and giggled. "Ew! Not allowed to think about that!" she teased back. "You can always go buy more, you know. You don't need to run around naked."

She cracked her fingers and grinned at him from behind her hands. "I got a lot of things in mind," she announced, "but the big one is I still have your New Year gift in my room, and we need to use it."

"I got two classes today, then there's the club fair and that assembly later. Ain't no time in my busy academic schedule to run off to the Pixie Dust an' get new clothes, yo."

He shrugged and grinned. "Okay, so you got me somethin'? This means I gotta go out and buy you a round?"

Reno wasn't getting the hang of these gift-giving holidays very well, really. So he was going to poke at the lizard some more as it made its way up his arm. D'awww.

"You don't 'gotta' do anything, Red," she pointed out, moving her hands to rescue her lizard from the floor and put it back on her lap. "I got you something, because I always get my friends stuff for New Years. That's how we do it at home."

"Not that I'll ever say no to a round."

"So don't say no to the round," Reno replied easily. And then, because the suspense was killing him, "What is it you wanna book my Tuesday for, then?"

"A trip," she replied sweetly, perfectly willing to taunt him. "Just a little jaunt off-island."
raspberryturk: (Raspberry!)

Reno blinked at that, and then raised an eyebrow. And smirked.

"Don't make me shake my lizard at you, yo." That poor little chameleon. "C'mooon, Doji. I ain't gonna beg, here."

"Diiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiirty!"

What? It so was.

"Aw, but it's so much fun making boys beg!" Well, it was. "Fiiiiiine. I got us passes. Full-access, behind-the-scenes passes."

Beat. Wait for it, Reno.

"For the zoo. Wanna go feed the animals?"

....

Reno was staring. And then staring some more. And then, fully and without warning, he started to laugh.

"Daaamn, Doji! You think I'm gonna pass up the opportunity to go see all the weird little fuzzy shit this planet's got to offer?"

Honestly.

Reno kind of wanted to see if he would be allowed to punch an alligator.

"No stealing the penguins," she lectured, waving a finger at him. "But we can take lots of pictures of you with, um, 'weird little fuzzy shit' to send back to Rude. You can even try and pass it off as a report on the wildlife or something."

Reno managed, somehow, to contain his laughter.

"Of course, yeah. The report can have, like, 'Penguns: Not for eating,' on it, or something, yo."

Reno hadn't written a report in ages.
