Care for Magical Creatures; Friday, Period 2 [ 01/16 ].

Minsc had been very excited for this second class, even if, instead of massive desk destruction, he had learned his lesson and simply had all the chairs and desks shoved aside, opening up the space in the middle for the much more comfortable sitting and lounging pillows.

He was sitting at one end of the circle, legs folded, with a small brown box with holes punched in it in front of him, beaming. Once the class settled, he figured it was time to begin!



"Good morning, class!" he greeted them. "First of all, I regret to inform you that we're technically not supposed to destroy desks. So they're just moved. I know, I know. Not as fun, but they said next time they will take it out of my paycheck. And I need that so Boo and I can eat!"

"Secondly, I would like to announce that we are all very honoured and lucky to have amongst ourselves two individuals who I have deemed quite worthy of assisting me in this class. Lady Blysse and Prince Arthur will be your go-to people for this semester."

"Now! Last week was very interesting, as most of you seem to have either bad, negative, or displeased reactions to transformations, which makes this class very important! Today, we will discuss why anyone would want to transform. In my own experience, there are many reasons. Protection, camouflage, better fighting. Tell me, which is easier to do? Ripping out a man's throat with your bare hands...or ripping it out with actual bear hands? HMMMM? Think about it!"

"Today, I am also going to introduce you to a very special creature. Now, strictly speaking, this little guy in this box here is not a magical creature. There are variants of the species that are indeed magical, but one would be very hard to procure. However, this creature posesses such interesting transformation powers that he may as well be magical as is. Class, I'd like you to meet the chameleon."

Here, Minsc opened the box, which was filled with plenty of the little lizards. Persuaded by the ranger's silent encouragement, they inched forward tentatively, blinking their eyes and flicking their tongue and slowly starting to match the colourful patterns on the pillows. He certainly hoped no one was squeamish about reptiles! Especially since he might just laugh at them, since they were so little and harmless and cute.

"Watch them, see? They are transforming their appearance to blend in with their surroundings! They do this for two main reasons: one is for camouflage. Blending in like this, predators will find them very hard to...well, find! But there is another reason which might interest you all a bit more." Here, he chuckled. "They also change colours to help attract mates! Oh-la-la! The magical variety of chameleons actually have the ability to change into whatever they can, to fend off predators and otherwise benefit their lives! Such a simple transformation, but effective!"

...and play with the chameleons! Minsc certainly will not mind the students chatting and handling the little moddable lizards to their heart's content! (Or even discontent).

Firekeeper watched the chameleons with interest, and shot a warning glance at Blind Seer when she saw he too was looking just as interested.

You cannot eat them, she admonished. I do not think our teacher would be pleased with you if you did.

I wasn't planning on it, Blind Seer retorted. Perhaps a trifle sheepishly. Teasing, however... he snapped his teeth at a chameleon who'd crept nearly all the way to his paws, sending it skittering backwards until it hit a pillow and promptly changed color to match it.

There were cute little lizards. Cute little color-changing lizards.

This meant, of course that Reno was going to grin his idiot head off while letting one crawl all over his hand. Awwwwww.

At one point, Dōjima and her chameleon came over and sat down next to Reno.

"You!" she announced cheerfully, trying to disentangle the lizard from her hair. "What are you doing on Tuesday?"

"That," Reno nearly singsonged, "depends totally on if I get my clothes back anytime soon, zoto."

He still had clothes. Or, at least, he still had one blue pinstriped button-down, his wrist-band armor, and his hot-pepper boxer shorts and he was going to wear them all for all he was worth. That was besides the point.

"Why, you got somethin' in mind?"

Leto listened, finding the subject of today's class a little more useful. He picked up one of the chameleons, letting it sit on his arm while he studied it carefully.

Arthur supposed that as far as beasts went, the chameleons were rather unimpressive. Since they were not actively trying to kill him, he undertook some careful poking and prodding and strange-looking before they lost their charm and interest.

Dōjima kept giggling as she played with the chameleon, letting it run over her hand and up her arm. Cute!

"So," Minsc prompted the students again, "what are some benefits to being able to transform? It might not hurt to discuss some of the problems with transformation, but I'm sure most of you pretty much know a lot of those, so let's try to open our minds and think of how a transformation might benefit us."

"Use the chameleons for inspiration! If I could transform into colours to blend in, for example, imagine how much easier it would be to track gnolls in the wild! They'd never see me coming! What could you do with this transforming ability?"

Firekeeper was silent for a long time before she finally, almost reluctantly, spoke.

"I am not so sure if changing color is helping when hunt is for deer, or elk," she said. "Their hearing is very good. But- if I could be running on four legs, then perhaps I could be at front of pack."

"An excellent point, Lady Blysse," Minsc agreed. "Keeping in mind what you might be doing when figuring out how to transform is very important. Blending in works great with dealing with humans, because so rarely, their senses are far more dulled than other creatures."

While Arthur had his own ideas about the term assisting, he was not that brand of arrogant that he'd make himself look the fool for a point. He was present, loosely watching over everything, and eying the chameleons with some distrust.

After class, he's distracted with putting the chameleons on things and being amused by how slowly or quickly that change to blend in, but he's definitely available!
