As the students came into the Danger Shop for today's class, Abigail Irene pulled a bag from near the door and brought it to a table she had already laid out.

"Today, we will be working on the most important principal of magic.

"Practicality."

She opened the bag and pulled out a number of wands which she placed on the table.

"I would like each one of you to choose a wand. Don't worry. You don't need to know which woods are good for what. These wands were made entirely for this exercise here and will only be required for today's class. That said, I should like you to keep them when you leave today, either as a memento of an interesting class, or as a reminder.

"Once you've chosen your tool, I would like each of you to assign a single spell to your wand. Just one spell, one magical effect. And no 'do whatever I say' spells, as that has been safeguarded against.

"Once you've done this, I have set up three challenges for each of you to complete. You must complete these individually using only the abilities of a normal human being and those given to you by your wand.

"Any questions?"

There was a number of supplies, of course, but many of them had been damaged from the earlier fireballs and their flames had run somewhat amok without men to tend to them. There was one small cache of things in a corner that seemed unaffected, but otherwise the area was full of useless char.

It took him a second to locate that one small cache and he went for it, wanting to get the hell out there.

There wasn't much there and what was there looked to be the last of their supplies. There were a few men in the tent just beyond, injured and sick. Their chests rose and fell but not in any way that could be called 'healthy'.

Noticing the sick and injured, Johnny stood, dumbfounded as to what to do.

These were the enemy. He had an order.

But... sick people.

Uh.

It was his human nature to help and cursing low he put back the medical supplies, leaving them. He would take shit for it, but he knew how to lie.

He started back for his own camp.

The officer looked at him skeptically as he returned.

"Soldier?"

"Yes?"

"Where's the supplies?"

"What they had left, was destroyed," he replied, kind of feeling like an ass.

The man winced but nodded.

"All right. We should be able to make due, but the rations will be tight for the next week."

There was grousing but no outright irritation with him.

"I'm sorry," he said, and he really was.
