Thaumaturgy 101 - Thursday - First Period - 1/15

As the students came into the Danger Shop for today's class, Abigail Irene pulled a bag from near the door and brought it to a table she had already laid out.

"Today, we will be working on the most important principal of magic.

"Practicality."

She opened the bag and pulled out a number of wands which she placed on the table.

"I would like each one of you to choose a wand. Don't worry. You don't need to know which woods are good for what. These wands were made entirely for this exercise here and will only be required for today's class. That said, I should like you to keep them when you leave today, either as a memento of an interesting class, or as a reminder.

"Once you've chosen your tool, I would like each of you to assign a single spell to your wand. Just one spell, one magical effect. And no 'do whatever I say' spells, as that has been safeguarded against.

"Once you've done this, I have set up three challenges for each of you to complete. You must complete these individually using only the abilities of a normal human being and those given to you by your wand.

"Any questions?"

Garrett-sensei was kidding. She had to be kidding.

She wasn't kidding. Damn.

Dōjima regarded the wands warily as the lecture continued. This was the Danger Shop, which meant it was all simulated (she hoped), but the idea was still a bit intimidating.

Harry wasn't sure about this. Sure, he'd managed to make it through an entire semester without the Danger Shop blowing up at him, but just how long could that luck last? It was a giant computer...thingy. It was bound to do SOMETHING horrible to him, or he to it, especially if he was supposed to be doing actual magic in here.

It takes a few moments for Savannah to choose her wand, but finally she decides on one made of Rosewood.

"Knock back spell," she said out loud. What? It was the one she used most.

Molly genuinely had no idea what she was doing, so she chose a wand at random, with no clue what kind of wood it was. Something light brownish.

She said quietly to the wand, "Invisibility, please."

"Flame on," Johnny said, assigning his wand a spell.

But, yeah, he lit up and immediately extinguished his flames, looking sheepish.

Yurika hesitated for a moment before selecting a wand.

"Telekinesis, please," she murmured softly, placing her fingertips on a dark brown one. Hopefully, that would not be too broad a talent for the Danger Shop to grant.

Sam picked a short wand, and asked the Danger Shop to put a freezing spell on it. It seemed like that might be something generally useful.

Summer reached for a wand and stared at it for awhile, having no idea what to do.

"Teleportation," she finally said to it.

Tony picked out a wand at random and considered it. Well, he really only had one good spell, didn't he? "Come To Me," he told the Danger Shop.

"Turning someone into a toad," Agnes decided. "And back again." After all, it was a pretty stereotypical thing for a witch to do, but something she'd probably never manage on her own.

Chris selected something that didn't look too girly and debated about what spell to put on it.

"Vanquish," was what he finally settled in. It would work for generic vanquishes probably.

The Challenges - #1

A busy market street with stalls on either side; a woman walks past you, her head held high. The next minute, a thief slips by and snatches her purse, running off in the opposite direction with her things.

"Stop, thief!"

She looks right at you.

"I need my purse, please!"

"No, problem lady," Johnny said and points his wand towards the fleeing man where he sends a fireball shooting towards his backside.

Okay, fireball came from his hand, but it was the same difference, right?

The thing about wands was that Sam wasn't used to having one, so his first instinct was to start running after the purse snatcher to try to catch him.

Tony focused on the purse and spoke the words of the Come To Me spell. He remembered at the last moment to use the wand. He gave it a swish-and-flick and Called the purse to his hand.

The Challenges - #2

Upon a battlefield now, each side entrenched in well-made positions. Bullets fly every few moments and the sounds are unrelenting, almost maddening. A man sits next to you, bandaged heavily. Your mission, given to you by the doctor at his side?

"You need to go and retrieve some medical supplies from the enemy entrenchment. We're all out."

Johnny was seriously trying to be a normal human being here. It just wasn't working out for him.

He lit up and entered the enemy camp on fire. This challenge? Piece of cake.

The Challenges - #3

A fancy dress party, with men and women in clustered groups all around a massive hall. Down one way is a darkened corridor with moving shadows. If you look on one wall, it bears a note.

"Get down the hallway."

But there's a very gabby and important woman in front of you as well as a number of other party guests in your way.

Was to be found during any of the simulations in the southwest corner, which was right near the door to the Danger Shop. She was certainly available during and after class for any questions.

Giselle bounced up to Professor Garrett, looking almost concerned but more interested. "Ma'am Professor?" she asked. "I think I'm supposed to be in this class but last Thursday I went outside to feed the dear birds, and I think I got lost."
