Movie Appreciation: Week 1, Period 3 (Fri. 1/9)

In time for third period, the Danger Shop had been transformed into a large movie theater complete with a stage in front of the screen. On the stage this morning, stood a large man with dreads who wore a leather ensemble that either screamed pot head or alien based on your point of view.

"Movies. People on Earth can't get enough of 'em. You may know I'm not from this galaxy, but I've seen enough movies in the past few years to have figured out it's all about entertainment. Which is where you come in." He stalked across the stage, trying to catch a few student's eyes as he went along. "This class is to appreciate movies. We'll watch clips an' discuss the types. I'm gonna ask you to spend a couple hours outside class watching some other movies as the semester goes along. Do it, don't, you're the one who won't get to kick Sheppard in the face when we act out meta for Hot Fuzz." Sadly for John, he wasn't kidding.

"This week we're doin' the intro thing. Tell us your name and describe your favorite movie. Then we'll see if anyone knows what the hell you're talkin' about and can guess the title. If you've never seen a movie or don't have a favorite, tell everybody why you're here."

"Hi, I'm Dinah Lance, I'm new here, and my favorite movie is... um. The Chinese one, with all the fighting..." Right, that wouldn't help much. How many movies had that? "With the female warrior who tracks down her old partner to get his help with the green sword, and they have to protect the younger female warrior who's in love with the nomad. They kind of swoop through the bamboo and it's visually so awesome. And the ending is -- I love the ending. Plus, did I mention the fighting?"

Dean grinned and guessed the meta of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. "Awesome movie."

"Yes!" Dinah grinned at him. "The tavern scene? When the whole place gets wrecked? And they're on two different floors and everyone is fighting at once?" So damn cool.

"Some of the best martial arts fight scenes ever," Dean agreed.

"I know! American movies should so take the hint, they're nowhere near as believable," Dinah said, shaking her head. "Plus, female warriors, which I have to get behind. And the two male leads are just... wow."

"You do know that people don't usually have fights among the tops of trees and stuff in real life, right?" Dean asked, wondering about the "believeable" declaration.

"Uhhh..." Okay, so she'd seen Helena do that stuff a hundred times on fire escapes and in between buildings, not to mention other Gotham supervillains. Must remember: other places? Not like New Gotham. "Sure! I meant the other scenes. Without flying or gliding. Although everyone probably should have been more bruised, too."

"I LOVE that one!" Sokka exclaimed. "With the... and the... and the FIGHTING! I forget what it's called, though."

"Stooping Pathner, Clandestine Serpent (http://fandomhigh.arborum.net/index.php/Stooping_Panther%2C_Clandestine_Serpent)," Dinah said, grinning widely back at Sokka thank you Fandomwiki link!. "The director did some other ones, like Abode of Soaring Swords, but Serpent's much better, in my opinion. Easier to follow, and better fights!"

"Fights are ALWAYS good!" Sokka replied.

Tony grinned. "That one had fantastic fight choreography. And cinematography. And... yeah, awesome movie."

Dinah beamed at him. "And music, and a script, and acting, and... yeah, it was so great. "Did you see Protagonist? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hero_(movie)) That one was good too, but really confusing."

"Yeah," Tony agreed. "Jet Li's always worth watching, though."

Dinah nodded and added, "And Michelle Yeoh. I wish she'd make more movies that weren't the James Bund ones, or those mummy movies."
