Library [Thursday, January 8]

Claudia was super excited about her new job! She'd dressed especially carefully today, to denote her new maturity: pinstriped hotpants over dark blue tights, bright pink suspenders, and one of her dad's work shirts over a white tank top.

Her hair was tucked up in a bun held in place by chopsticks, and her earrings were a very subdued pair of lacquered watermelon slices. On anyone else, it'd look like she'd mugged a deranged drag queen. On Claudia, it looked great.

She traipsed to the room number she'd been given on the piece of paper from the office and opened the door.

"Oh, it's full of books!" she said, sounding surprised.

Claudia'd found a seat and a huge stash of banana-flavored hard candies.

Banana flavoring totally made it a breakfast food, she decided.

Now she had decided to explore the library. "Why aren't the books grouped by color?"

Indy had taken a step out of his office to meet his new library when he saw her.

And then heard her. Good, God. Are they kidding?

"Hi," he said coming closer. "Actually they're sorted by the Dewey Decimal system. I'm the librarian. Are you Claudia?"

"I am," she chirped. "Who's Dewey? Are you Dewey? I thought I was working for a doctor."

"No, I'm not Dewey," he said stifiling a sigh. "I'm Dr. Indiana Jones. The Dewey Decimal is just the system we use to classify and organize books."

"Why are you named after a really boring state?" Claudia asked. "And can't we just organize everything by something that makes sense? Like color? Oooh! Or height! Or how thick a book is! That way all the boring ones will be together!"

"Indiana is not a boring name," he said now rubbing his forehead. "And if you organize the books like that then we'll never be able to find the one someone might need."

"There are so many any how," Claudia said. "Probably couldn't find it anyway."

Indy opened his mouth to say something but quickly shut it again. This was so not his day.

"Look, it's not that hard. It's just a matter of making sure that the numbers on the side of the book match the ones around it," he said picking up a book to show her. "See? Everything matches."

He paused for a moment before adding: "Like your outfit."

"You like it?" Claudia asked. "I was going to add an inner tube, but I thought that might've been a little over the top."

Yes, completely ignoring everything he said about how to do the job.

Inner tube? Where the hell was she going wear a-

Right. Don't ask.

"Yes. Probably so," Indiana said trying to follow the logic there. "So. Do you have any questions so far?"

"Are there always banana-flavored things around?" she asked. "Because it really is the most inferior of all artificial flavors."

"Ah. Maybe," Indiana replied. "There seems to be a thing with the library and bananas this week. Yesterday there was banana bread. Before that it was regular bananas. And the other day my desk was filled with banana pudding. It will most likely be different tomorrow. And hopefully next week."

"I like strawberry," Claudia offered, just in case he was taking requests or something.

Indiana grinned and let out a chuckle. "So do I. Unfortunately the library seems to have a mind of its own. Which is why we're always nice to the books. And we don't complain about the bananas. Or anything else it might throw at us."

"It could throw the bananas?!"

"Well it's thrown books at me," Indiana admitted with some amusement. "So I don't think throwing bananas would be too difficult."

"But it's a library," Claudia explained patiently.

"Trust me kid," Indiana said with a grin. "It's not just a library."

He was pretty hot for an old guy.

"If you say so."

Too bad he was nuts.

"Give yourself a little more time here," he said trying not to smirk. "You'll see what I mean."

Claudia'd found a book to keep herself occupied!

Yes, it was a book full of pictures. Shh.

Claudia was back to the front desk. She was spinning in circles in the wheely chair. Wheee!

Sam had heard that there was a new library aide this term, and when all his classes were over, his curiosity got the better of him, and he went to see if she was there. "Having fun?" he said, observing the chair spinning.

Hello there, cute boy.

"Yes!" Claudia said, trying to stop from spinning and look Oh So Very Professional. "Can I help you find anything?"

Not that she knew where anything was.

Now that she wasn't spinning, Sam got a better look at her ~~special~~ unique outfit, and it took a second for him to answer. "No, actually, I just wanted to say hi and see how your first day's going. I'm Sam, I work here too."

Ooooh.

"Oooh," she said aloud. So smooth. "I'm Claudia! Hi!"

"It's nice to meet you," Sam said. "Have things been going all right so far?"

Claudia nodded. "There's a weird amount of banana hard candy around today," she said.

Way to go Fandom, messing with the newbies already.

"Yeah, I think the library's on a banana kick. I got banana bread yesterday," he said. "Um. Sometimes this place is a little weird, in case you haven't had that conversation five hundred times already."

Claudia nodded. "I worry about the drugs people are on here," she said.

"It's not exactly drugs. Some people are just nuts."

Oh yes Sam, way to be helpful.

"I'm thinking my parents didn't read the brochure too carefully before they sent me," Claudia said, eyes wide. "My roommate is a boy!"

Yeah, that's the weird part.

"I had a female roommate for two years," Sam said. "You get used to it after a while. Especially if you start dating."

"Ooooh, you can do that?" Claudia grinned.

Poor, poor Zayne.

"It worked for Dawn and I," Sam said. He wasn't going to mention how he'd screwed it up, of course. "But yeah, you won't get into trouble or anything."

Claudia was designing wedding invitations in her mind--something tasteful in yellow and lavender.

She'd have to learn how Zayne spelled his name, of course. And get him off drugs.

"Ooooh. Thanks, Sam!"

"You're welcome," Sam said, hoping that Claudia's roommate would appreciate that as much as she seemed to. "And if you ever need help here in the library, I can help there too."

God alone knew what kind of havoc Sam would have to fix.

"You work Wednesdays, right?" She smiled. "I might stop in and see how you do things."

"That sounds great. I never mind having more visitors," he said.

Claudia'd found more banana flavored candy (it was everywhere) and was washing it down with a Diet Coke.

Mmm. Healthy.

Claudia was feeling a little sick. Turns out spinning in circles for an hour and then eating sugar was a bad idea.
