"All right," said Mohinder, snapping a book closed as he turned to greet the class. "I'm Dr Mohinder Suresh, most recently of a reletively current New York. In class we'll largely be sticking to Earth based lifeforms, and more often than not humans."

"Now, if this is your first class here, this will be new to you. In any case I'd like you to introduce yourself; name, origin, why you're taking this class and what you think is the most important drug - legal drug - so far developed." Mohinder paused. "Oh, and if you're likely to faint at the sight of blood."

After the introductions, Mohinder continued, passing out handouts. "Let's talk reflexes and reaction times. Typically someone can respond to outside stimulus no sooner than 150 milliseconds. It's how false starts are recorded in athletics, and like anything else can be affected by lack of sleep, alcohol or other distractions."

"On this board," he said gesturing at the gridded board hung on a wall at one side of the classroom, "a light will flash in a random pattern, designed to test your complex reaction times with a number of hits." Mohinder dropped the padded hammer by the board and sat back at his desk.

Cal reminded himself that lame introductions at least only lasted a week.

"My name's Cal Stephanides," he started, "I'm from Detroit, circa 1976. I'm taking this class because I thought it would be interesting"--which was a much less telling answer to that part than admitting his very personal investment in knowing about this stuff--"and, uh, would nicotine count? If not, probably, I don't know, aspirin."

"It's more recreational than most," replied Mohinder. "If you're not referring to its use as a pesticide or the uncertain therapeutic links with some neurological disorders."

"...I'm not very...science-y." Better put it out there now.

"So, arts or social sciences focussed?" Mohinder guessed.

"Ohhh, yeah," Cal nodded, feeling like this was a grave understatement and wondering if the truth in it left him with picking the wrong class.

But he did want to know more about this stuff. Not that knowing more would help change anything, but...

"Well, biology is one of the softest of the sciences," Mohinder told him. "We all have to live in this world, and to do that it helps to understand it."

Cal's head bobbed a little in a nod. "Exactly," he said. "I'm not science-y, but, yeah, if I'm going to try to be more science-y about anything, it should be, you know, bodies and stuff..."

"I'm Liz Sherman," Liz said, "I'm from New Jersey, 1992 and I'm taking this class because it sounded interesting,"

"Good morning, Liz," Mohinder said, checking her name off against a list. " Have you had much of a science background - either in Fandom or at home?"

"I don't really have a traditional science background," Liz replied, "but my guardian is a paranormal advisor, he's taught me some things relating to that field,"

"Paaranormal science," said Mohinder. "I take it that there is a more formal approach to that in your New Jersey?"

Liz nodded, "not too many people know about its existence, but my guardian's the head of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense,"

"I'm Chris Halliwell, from San Francisco, circa 2021," Chris said. "And I'd say that the most important drug is antibiotics."

"I hope you haven't needed to take it often," said Mohinder. "But yes, it's a widely used class of drugs despite no longer being the near miracle cure it once was."

Chris nodded. "It's saved a lot of lives though."

"It's certainly come a long from an accidental fungus and an open window," said Mohinder.

"My name is Sokka, I'm from the South Pole -- not yours, a different one -- and the most important drug hands down is caffeine. Oh, and I'm here because I like science."

The board (http://www.reflexgame.com/) is set up with a grid and a digital timer. Hits with the mallet score and the lights are random. ~~Other than that mod away!~~

Sokka managed to both get a very high score and hit himself in the face with the mallet accidentally. He was just skilled like that.

He's around during and after class.

"Dr. Suresh, sir," Chris said, approaching after class. "Do you need a TA for this class?"

"I haven't onw as yet," replied Mohinder. "Is the subject something that interests you?"

"Yeah, it seems like an interesting class and this is my last semester in Fandom," Chris said.

"Then you know the standard TAig roles, helping out your fellow students, equipment setup and, not that I anticipate it - covering class in my absence?" checked Mohinder. "Do you know what you're going to do next?"

"College," Chris said. "I think for journalism, but I haven't decided for sure."

"A writer," said Mohinder. "Did you have to Fandom-edit your personal statements back to relative normality?"

Whee! 1st class of the semester.
