Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

If anyone had hoped for good weather for the picnic, their wish had been granted as the day turned out to be sunny and warm. Everything had been cleaned up, spiffed up and bedazzled dazzled made as perfect as possible for the new arrivals. They deserved at least a few moments of pleasantness before the weirdness started to sink in.

May whatever deity they believed in help them now.

As usual, there were long tables set up with food and drinks, a table of nametags, and two signs: one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, and one listing rooms and roommates for the new students. With everything in place, the picnic was ready to begin.

[OCD is up!! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible.]

"I am from Rohan," she said. "I did not travel for long, but it seems as though I have gone a long ways away from home."

Judging by the way Eowyn was dressed, and the fact that Meg had never heard of Rohan? She had to nod in agreement. "A very long ways. But this isn't such a bad place. It's strange at times. But the people are very, very nice."

"There are so many of them," Éowyn said, looking around again. "Does everyone get along?"

The picnic was crowded but Meg had been to various White House receptions that were larger. "For the most part. There's the usual teenaged angst. But no one's trying to kill one another."

"That is always wonderful to hear," Éowyn said with a bit of a laugh. It was a nice change from home, but she wasn't sure of that was something to discuss. "The stables seem lovely as well. I did not know how well they would be prepared for new horses."

"I think they keep up on it. There seems like there's always horses passing through," Meg explained. "Last semester a talking horse was a student."

Éowyn's eyes lit up as she stared at Meg. "Are you certain? Did he really speak?"

Meg felt bad that she was probably going to be disappointed. "He did. Unfortunately I think he's left the island. But you never know who or what is going to turn up next."

"If one was here, perhaps there will be more in the future," Éowyn said hopefully. "I knew this was a unique place, but I had no idea how much."

"Even when you know it's unique, there's still stuff to surprise you," Meg smiled. "I've seen and done things since I've been here that I never thought possible." Of course she'd also done things she'd much rather never think of again. Like making out with someone the same age as her younger brother.

"I was sent here for just that reason, to do things I cannot do at home," Éowyn said. "I was told that women can learn to fight here? Along with the men?"

Home sounded interesting. "Women can do whatever they'd like here," Meg nodded. "There's a Girls With Guns Club. And I think there's a salle for fencing and sword fighting."

Éowyn perked up noticeably at the mention of sword fighting. "Whatever they'd like?" she repeated, like she couldn't quite believe it. "Oh, I do like the sound of that."

"Whatever they'd like," Meg promised. "It isn't like that where you're from?"

"No, women are not quite so free there," Éowyn admitted. "My uncle is the king, which allows me to have more freedom than some. I may speak my mind freely without recourse, although I am certain my brother wishes I did not do so often. But to fight? To learn the skills of a man? No, all that I know I have learned in secret."

At least she wasn't wearing a burka was Meg's first thought, but then she reminded herself that they weren't just talking about cultural differences but most likely a completely different world. Which meant that while Eowyn was here, Meg was going to have to show her all freedoms women had.

"You should talk to Professor Skywalker. He's skilled in swordfighting." A light saber was essentially a fancy sword after all. "Maybe he can help you. Or suggest someone that can."
