Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

If anyone had hoped for good weather for the picnic, their wish had been granted as the day turned out to be sunny and warm. Everything had been cleaned up, spiffed up and ~~bedazzled~~ ~~dazzled~~ made as perfect as possible for the new arrivals. They deserved at least a few moments of pleasantness before the weirdness started to sink in.

May whatever deity they believed in help them now.

As usual, there were long tables set up with food and drinks, a table of nametags, and two signs: one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, and one listing rooms and roommates for the new students. With everything in place, the picnic was ready to begin.

"I got sent here last summer," said Lion-o. "I really wasn't sure if I would like it at first. All the other kids were so much older than me, and my roommate is a little... different, but by the end of the summer, I really wanted to stay."

"Different?" Leto couldn't help wondering what someone like Lion-o would find different.

"Oh, don't get me wrong. Toby is a nice guy, once you get to know him," said Lion-o. "He just stared a lot for the first day. No, more like the first week." It was really more like the first month.

"I've heard that in some cultures staring isn't considered bad manners," Leto replied drily. "Are all Thunderans the same as you?" he wondered if they could be the result of a hybridisation experiment by the Tleilaxu.

"Oh, not at all," said Lion-o. "We all come from different clans. My father and I are from the Lion clan, of course, which are the hereditary rulers. And besides the Thunderans, we also have the snarfs. They're a lot smaller. Well, most of the time they are. My Snarf is just about as tall as me if he uses his tail to stand."

"Snarfs?" It sounded like a team of both anthropologists and zoologists should be sent to Thundera, unless it was, as he suspected, a Tleilaxu laboratory planet.

"Yeah! Snarf's my..." Lion-o paused in mid-sentence, looking around to see if anyone else was listening. "Snarf's my nanny. He refused to let me go away alone. He's kind of handy to have around, though."

"Like a servant?" Leto asked.

"Yeah, though he doesn't like to be called that. He's great, though. Snarfs are all very loyal," said Lion-o.

"I would like to meet him sometime," Leto said. "So what kind of advice would you offer a newcomer to this place?"

"I'll make sure you do," said Lion-o.

"As for advice... don't be afraid to ask for help! One of my teachers suggested that I learn how to use a gun, but I had no clue where to start. Then I found another girl in my class with the same problem, but she knew someone who could teach us."

He laughed, then said: "I will keep that in mind, although I suspect fighting lessons is not what Irulan had planned for me."

"Do you know what classes you're taking yet? There are some really neat teachers here," said Lion-o.

"Ethics and Care for Magical Creatures," Leto told him. "The former because it's the foundation of everything else and the latter because I found the subject amusing."

Lion-o nodded. "You'll have Professor Skywalker for the first one. I haven't had him yet, but everyone here seems to talk about him. I'm taking something called Heroing 101, because it seemed interesting, and Mad Kings and Queens, 'cause I took her class last summer and it was really educational."

"The subjects seem quite varied," Leto replied. "You want to be a hero, but avoid the madness of royalty?"

"It is, but I'm a member of the Thundercats, the noble warriors who serve my father," said Lion-o. "I figured it would be useful. And then one day I'll be Lord of the Thundercats like my father, so avoiding madness is really important! I don't want to be like one of those mad kings who makes people miserable."

"I too would like to avoid that fate," Leto replied quietly, his face turning serious.

"Yeah, it really didn't sound pleasant," said Lion-o. "There was one king we covered last summer that was so awful, I had to leave in the middle of the lecture."

"What did he do?" Leto asked.

[I need to sleep soon!]

"He would torture his subjects. I don't think it's a very good way to earn people's loyalty," said Lion-o softly.

"Some would argue against you there," Leto said. "And looking at history that king seems more like the norm than the exception."

"My father never needed to mistreat people to earn their loyalty or respect," said Lion-o. "And it paid off when he was left blind after a battle. Now his subjects are caring for him."

"That would be what a lot of harsher rulers miss," Leto grinned. "But among my people a blind person is left alone in the desert, so as to not endanger the tribe."
