Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

If anyone had hoped for good weather for the picnic, their wish had been granted as the day turned out to be sunny and warm. Everything had been cleaned up, spiffed up and bedazzled dazzled made as perfect as possible for the new arrivals. They deserved at least a few moments of pleasantness before the weirdness started to sink in.

May whatever deity they believed in help them now.

As usual, there were long tables set up with food and drinks, a table of nametags, and two signs: one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, and one listing rooms and roommates for the new students. With everything in place, the picnic was ready to begin.

"That is the best lotion!" Claudia exclaimed as she came up. She'd used the move as inspiration for her wardrobe today: a moving man's red jumpsuit with "Harvey" written on the pocket, black Chuck Taylors, and a railroad conductor's hat over her long black hair, which she'd chosen to let hang loose today. The jumpsuit was accessorized with a belt made out of duct tape, a paper maiché snake bracelet from junior high that had held up remarkably well, and dangly metallic earrings that had set off the detector. On anyone else, the outfit would have been a cry for help. On Claudia, it looked great.

"I'm Claudia!"

"Claudia!" Toby took in the outfit and grinned. "Thanks! I wanted to try something a little extra for the whole newbie thing. Oh my god, I love your bracelet, I swear I totally stole one of those from my BFF Sarah back in the day!"

"Thank you," Claudia said, giggling. "I made it myself! I made the belt too!"

"That is amazing! So crafty. Did you make the jumpsuit thing?" He wasn't sure how he felt about the color, but she was Pulling. It. Off.

"This? No," Claudia admitted. "I got it at one of those stores where janitors shop?"

"Ooh, resourceful, I like it," Toby replied happily. "Dude, you know, I totally work at this awesome clothing store. You should check it out sometime."

Toby was now her most favorite person ever. "You do not!" she squealed. "Really?"

"For serious!" Toby grinned. "There's even free like, leftover stuff sometimes. But Tink used to make us burn it."

"Tink was this like, drunk fairy chick and if she thought something was massively ugly she'd set it on fire. I think she had rage issues or something," Toby could be a syc psyhe shrink.

Claudia blinked politely for a moment as she processed that. "What did she think of as massively ugly?"

"Things that weren't like in style and stuff. She was all about the trends. We're fully stocked in those sweater dress things right now," he said thoughtfully. Well, as thoughtful as he got.

"With boots and big chunky belts?" Claudia asked.

It was sad when 1990s fashion made her sound relevant.

"Exactly," Toby was glad she wasn't a loser and understood fashion. "I've been wearing some nice sweaters lately, too. For men, though."

"It's that time of year, sadly," Claudia said. "I soooo prefer summer."

"Oh my god, me too! The lack of need for clothing. The beach. Shirtless boys. Ahh, so many awesome reasons summer is way better. We had a random weekend of summer last month, though. That was sweet."
