Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

If anyone had hoped for good weather for the picnic, their wish had been granted as the day turned out to be sunny and warm. Everything had been cleaned up, spiffed up and ~~bedazzled~~ ~~dazzled~~ made as perfect as possible for the new arrivals. They deserved at least a few moments of pleasantness before the weirdness started to sink in.

May whatever deity they believed in help them now.

As usual, there were long tables set up with food and drinks, a table of nametags, and two signs: one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, and one listing rooms and roommates for the new students. With everything in place, the picnic was ready to begin.

It was hard not to notice a girl standing on a chair to scan the crowd, and, since she was new, Chad wandered over to see if she needed help.

It certainly wasn't helping, although he didn't realize it, that his nametag read Chad and not Yasutora Sado.

"Can I help you fin--" Chad started to ask the girl until he caught her nametag. "Oh. You're Dinah?"

"Yup. Hi! Was someone looking for me? Maybe my roommate?" Dinah said hopefully, smiling big. Standing on the chair she was at eye-level at him. Really big guy, whoa. "Do you know Yasutaro?"

"It's actually -tora," Chad said, sighing slightly because they never seemed to get his name right. "And, yeah, that's me. Hi." He lifted up a hand.

Dinah had already reached for his hand before he said that, and now froze, weakly shaking it. "Wait. What? Um. Hi. I. Wait."

Brain. Frozen. In. Tracks.

At least she hadn't fallen off the chair? Yet?

Chad was very confused by all of that, not knowing exactly if that was a good response or a bad one, but, noting Dinah's weak handshake, he made sure to shake back very gently.

"Room 312, right?" Maybe he had the wrong Dinah Lance? And there was a new kid named Yasutaro?

"Yes, Room 312, and, omigod. You're a guy. I-- it's a mistake, right?" Dinah asked, still shaking his hand. "I mean. Heh. Right, of course." She relaxed a little. "They'd never arrange co-ed roomies on purpose. Wow. That threw me for a second."

"Don't worry," Chad offered, as consolingly as his deep monotone would allow. "They do that a lot here. My last roommate was a girl, too."

Aaaaand that's what has Dinah finally tumbling off the chair. "Eeeep!"

And, of course, when a girl was falling from a chair, Chad was going to make sure that he caught her.

Especially his new roommate.

"Hi I'm so embarrassed I might die. Dinah," Dinah muttered into his shoulder, where her face was smushed. "Nice to meet you?"

"Chad," he had to grin a little, making sure Dinah might have stabilized a little before helping to set her on her feet. "I know, it says something else, but Chad's what everyone calls me around here."

"Chad. Chad! Hi, Chad." Dinah got a little calmer as she kept repeating it, then cleared her throat. "So, okay, you seem really nice, but, wow. Rooming with a guy. Never done that. And it's not like I have a boyfriend who'd care. Anymore." That might have sounded a little bitter. "But. Uh. How-- I mean, it could be really awkward?"

What she was trying to say and failing totally was that if she had to be seen even slightly naked by a guy it should not be a really big, really cute guy who she didn't even know and right, why not burst into flames? Why couldn't that be her mutant power?

"Uh, well," Chad blinked, trying to keep up with Dinah and failing a little. "Err..."

"Um. My boyfriend's still got a single," he offered, "so I can disappear whenever you need? And we could, uh, put up curtains or something, if that'd help?"

"Wait, you have a boyfriend?" And that was a mix of disappointment and relief, and it also helped her regain her mental footing. Which didn't mean he wasn't bi, and this wouldn't be awkward, and hi, she wouldn't look, but ... okay, she could be cool with this. Maybe. "Um. Curtains? Oooo. Maybe one of those cute folding screens? That would be cool, wouldn't it?" She smiled a little at Chad. "Sorry I'm such a spaz."

Just a bit, Chad answered to himself, but it was cute. He gave Dinah the faintest of smiles.

"I like the screen idea a lot," he admitted, since a screen would add a nice little touch of Japan. "And how do you feel about cats? I have one, but if it's a problem, he can just stay with Teddy."

Dinah brightened immediately. "I love cats! We didn't have one at home, but I really wanted to get one. No, he can totally stay in our room! What's his name?" Okay, a big cute roomie who liked cats. Helena was never going to believe this... and maaaaybe Dinah just wouldn't tell her about it.

Well, that was good news. Very good news. Chad wasn't sure he could really give the cat up, and it would be really hard living with someone who didn't appreciate cats.

"Prince Oscar Pedro Neko-kun," Chad answered.

Then paused.

"The Third. Teddy's got a cat, too, Sir Galliano Orden Crazypants Esquire, so he'll hang out a lot, too."

"Crazypants Esquire? And Prince Oscar Pedro.. the third?" Dinah grinned. "Awesome!"

Okay. She definitely had to keep a roomie who'd name his cat that. Barbara and Helena didn't have to know! Right? Right!

"Oooo. Maybe I can get one...."

Aw, Dinah really shouldn't encourage him like that.

"That'd be a great idea."

Squee! Dinah grinned up at him. "Oh, this is going to be awesome!"

Chad gave a small smile back. "Feel a bit better about it, then?" he asked. "No more falling off chairs?"

"No more falling," Dinah said, turning bright pink, but laughing. "Thanks. You're being really nice. I appreciate it." She kind of wanted to ask if he'd mind rooming with someone who was meta, but things were going so well....

"So, is it true there are aliens, here, or was Jamie messing with me?"

Chad didn't see what he was doing that was so nice, he was just being himself, but it was nice that Dinah thought so. He shook his head. "He's not messing with you," he assured her. "There're aliens. My boyfriend's actually one."

"Oooooo," Dinah said, thrilled. "Really? Wow." She was quiet a minute, then just had to ask, "Does he have wings? Or antennae?"

"No antennae," Chad informed her, "but he does have wings. Doesn't use them very often. He's a shapeshifter, so he could have antennae, but he mostly just looks like a normal person most of the time."
