Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

If anyone had hoped for good weather for the picnic, their wish had been granted as the day turned out to be sunny and warm. Everything had been cleaned up, spiffed up and bedazzled dazzled made as perfect as possible for the new arrivals. They deserved at least a few moments of pleasantness before the weirdness started to sink in.

May whatever deity they believed in help them now.

As usual, there were long tables set up with food and drinks, a table of nametags, and two signs: one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, and one listing rooms and roommates for the new students. With everything in place, the picnic was ready to begin.

[OCD is up!! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible.]

Dinah was already taller than most of the crowd, but she still got up on a chair to look around for anyone who looked like a Jamie. Was Jamie a boy or a girl? Man, why didn't get a really easy name to figure out for her Big Sib?

Actually there were a lot of Jamies. Two dozen of them as a matter of fact. All with their name tags on proclaiming that they were Jamie Madrox.

"Dinah!" they all called randomly. "We are looking for a Dinah. She's possibly in a kitchen with a banjo. Hello? Dinah?"

"Oh, right, like I haven't heard that one--" Dinah's jaw dropped as she turned around on her perch and glimpsed the crowd headed her way. "Holy crap!"

Aaaand that would be Dinah falling off the chair, an arm shooting up from the ground before she could think if really this was a good idea. "Me! Dinah! I'm here!"

And that would be the two dozen or so Jamies encircling the new sib.

"Oh look. She fell right over."

"Give her some air."

"Give her some water."

"Give her a sandwich."

"Why would we give her a sandwich."

"I'm hungry. Maybe she'll share."

"Everyone just shut up," Jamie said pushing through the ring of duplicates. "Hi Dinah. We- I mean I'm your big brother, Jamie. Welcome to Fandom High."

"Hi. Hi. Hi. Hi? Hi, I'm Dinah, but, right, you knew that. Hi? Hi. Hey." Dinah managed to stagger to her feet, turning in a circle until she got back to the one who'd greeted her. Then her face broke into a grin. "You! You're-- yes! YAYYYYY!" She flung her arms up in victory. "Metas! Millions of Metas!"

"Metas?" Jamie queried. "Actually I'm a mutant and technically it's about twenty four of me. Not a million."

He made a gesture and then all the Jamies were sucked back into himself. He staggered for a second and grinned. "Ooo. Headrush."

"Mutant?" Dinah said back, curious enough to almost wriggle with it. "But you-- whoaaaaaaa." She blinked as all the Jamies were absorbed into one, and her jaw went slack. "That is so cool. I've never heard of anyone with that power before, oh, that must be so great for classes. And skipping them!" Dinah got her breath back, still beaming. "I'm like you! Except I can't do that at all!"

"Like me?" Jamie asked looking confused. "Do you mean you're a mutant or you have an affinity for Xerox machines?"

"Mutant! Well, we call them metas in New Gotham, and the only thing I've done with a Xerox machine was break one, but that was an accident..." Dinah grinned and took a breath. "Okay, look. I'm supposed to keep this a secret, except that usually we end up telling other metas anyway, soooo." She took off her sunglasses and held them in the palm of her hand, and tried to lift them.

Aaaaand they went zinging over there. "Ooops."

"Ah. Gotcha," Jamie said watching the sunglasses fly. "Nice spin on that. And I wouldn't worry about the whole powers thing. Half the people in this school have some weird mojo or another. And the normal ones here are pretty cool with it. New Gotham? Where is that?"

"Seriously?" Dinah squeed, overwhelmed with glee and relief and disbelief and wow, yay! "And, um, it's in New Jersey. Okay, this is weird. You're like the fourth person who's never heard of it and there are eight million people there. What the heck?"

META HIGH SCHOOL. Omigod, she loved Alfred for suggesting this so much!

"Oh yeah," Jamie said shaking his head. "This place is a little strange. Everyone here is from a different dimension or world or something weird like that. So some people won't have a New Gotham but will have... I don't know. an Atlantic City made of shrimp."

Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling (Spring 2009)

[identity profile] blondecanary.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 06:26 pm (UTC)(link)
"Dimensions. Wait wait wait, worlds? Really? Seriously?" Because just there were metas-- or mutants, whichever-- here, that wouldn't mean this was totally on the up and up... on the other hand, it would explain how even the new kids never heard of her home city. "Shrimp? That's not where you're from, is it?" Because hey, who knew?

[identity profile] multi-madrox.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
"Me? No, no shrimp," Jamie replied. "I was just throwing that out there as an example. Though it's always possible. You'll find all sorts of different people here and a few aliens as well."

[identity profile] blondecanary.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 06:47 pm (UTC)(link)
"Aliens. Okay, now, you're messing with me." Dinah grinned at him. "But it would be so cool if you weren't, I gotta admit."

[identity profile] multi-madrox.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
"Nope. Totally the truth," Jamie replied. "Had a crush on one my first year here. She was dreamy."

And could probably break him in half.

[identity profile] blondecanary.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Dinah stared at him, wishing she had the nerve to try to read his mind but no, bad Dinah, rude, and oh my god aliens! For real! "Wow. I mean, wow." She beamed at Jamie, and bounced on her toes. "This is just so cool! Okay. So. What else? What do I need to do to not get in trouble around here? And, oh, man. I have so many questions."

Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling (Spring 2009)

[identity profile] multi-madrox.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well I'm a bad example on how not to get in trouble," Jamie replied. "Just be nice and try not to blow anything or anyone up and you should be fine. i can at least give you a handwavy tour of the school later and if you have any questions you can just track me down."

[identity profile] blondecanary.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Dinah laughed. "Sounds great to me. Thanks! I'm in room 312. With, um. Chad."

[identity profile] multi-madrox.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Jamie smirked. "Don't worry. Chad's a nice guy. I'll stop by and check in to make sure you are doing okay."
