BWI Airport, Portalocity Port, Saturday Morning

Spirit's ride to the island had been settled and Adora was trying very hard not to be nervous while she waited for the Fandom transport to arrive. Looking out the airport window, Adora realized she'd never seen so many fleets of vehicles in all her life that weren't involved in some sort of insurrection, and found herself desperately hoping her mother was right about this Earth place being safe from the Horde.

Just the thought of her family calmed Adora and she instinctively reached to touch the Sword of Protection where it was hidden by her hair and clothing, feeling that no matter where she was, she always had a way to contact the people she loved.

Now if only she knew for sure that this room marked "Fandom High" was really where she needed to be. Adora paced the large space as she waited, thinking she couldn't possibly be the only new student journeying to campus in this manner.

"Oh, really?" Sookie asked curiously, smiling up at him just a little nervously. "I don't know that I've ever reminded anyone of anyone but me."

"It's the hair. My girl, she has blonde hair," he admitted with the smile. Though now that he's heard the accent he was being reminded strongly of Jasper. "I'm Emmett."

"Sookie," she said, her smile getting a little easier. "Is your girlfriend coming with you to the school? I mean, assuming that's where you're heading."

Oh god, it took everything Emmett had not to laugh at the name Sucky. His grin just became wider than usual.

"Uh, no, she's staying in Washington. We'll see each other on weekends though," he said. "Where are you from, Sookie?"

"Louisiana. Little bitty town in the north, called Bon Temps," she told him, nodding and doing her hardest to keep her mind to herself for the time being. "You?"

"Forks. Little bitty town waaaaaay up north in Washington," he said. "I heard the town we're living it is on the itty bitty side too."

"And on an island," Sookie said, nodding and smiling out of nervousness more than anything. "I've never actually been this far from home before."

"Really?" Awww that was cute. Emmett hadn't traveled much when he was human either. Then again, cars those days weren't really meant for cross country travel. "It's good to get out sometimes. Even if it is from one small town to another."

She nodded eagerly. "And meeting new people's...always good," she said hesitantly, lowering her shields just enough to see if Emmett was giving off anything interesting.

If Sookie had been able to hear Emmett's thoughts she probably would have slapped him.

"Most of the time, yeah. Sometimes you meet the occasional..." He was going to say "dick" but Emmett remembered enough from his human days back in Tennessee that Southern girls didn't really like that kind of language. "Jerk."

But the weird thing was that she couldn't hear him. Not at all. It was like there was nothing standing right there.

"...I can't hear you," she breathed aloud in amazement, peering at him.

That might have been a bit misleading.

Emmett raised an eyebrow. "Seriously? Usually I get accused of shouting everything. Want me to talk louder?"

She dropped all her shields, trying to hear anything. And everyone else was coming in loud and clear, but there was nothing from Emmett.

She kind of loved it.

"Oh my stars." And then she remembered herself, and quickly covered, "Oh! Um, no, no, nevermind. I can hear you, uh, vocally just fine. You're plenty loud. Don't mind me."

Considering Emmett had a brother who could read minds, it was kind of pathetic that telepathy didn't even cross his mind. He wasn't too good at putting two and two together.

"You sure?" he asked. "You look...surprised."

Emmett did a quick double-check to make sure he wasn't standing in the sun.

"I'm fine," she assured him, trying to wipe the dopey, delighted look off her face and replace her shields. She could still hear everyone else, after all, and there was some guy about thirty feet to her left who was thinking about his mistress's better assets. Nothing she needed to be picking up. "Just, um, realized something."

"Nothing bad, I hope?" he asked. The last thing he needed was freaking someone out on the first day. Jasper would never let him live it down.

"No, something wonderful," she said, smiling again. She'd never met anyone she couldn't hear. "Um, I...forgot what we were talking about."

"About how some people can be jerks," he said, smiling at her. He was getting the kind of spacey vibe that Alice gave off.

"Right. Yeah, people can be. I hope they're less so, here. I got my share of jerks back home," she said, making a face.
