Chemistry, Period 1, 12/19

"Hi," Tyler greeted the class as they gathered. The classroom was utterly nondescript today, with all the lab equipment packed away, though there was a pony lying on a cushion in a front corner of the room loudly chomping an apple and occasionally glaring at students who were rude enough to stare at him.

"You have been a fantastic class. I, however, am going to be the cruel teacher who makes you actually take a real final on the last day before break. Test papers are on your desks: You have all period to answer any five of the ten questions. If you need help that is not 'what's the answer to number seven', I will be around."

"Thanks again, guys."

Tyler went to lean against his desk and watch the students take the test.

2. Saltpeter- four parts to the one part carbon and one part sulfur.

3. Adding soap flakes, motor oil, or sugar. Makes it stickier.

5. Peanut brittle. Best freakin' science experiment ever. Except for the ones that blow things up.

7. Dry water? Missed that class.

8. Dissolve the PVA stuff over a Bunsen Burner and then let it cool and add Borax. Green food coloring makes it look like snot!

Rikku was bouncing in her seat. Yay, finals!

1. Nitroglycerin is made up of nitric acid, sulfuric acid, and glycerin. All of which should be added very carefully.

3. Sugar or soap flakes can be added to the gas, to make the whole explosion stickier and more dangerous. Also you can use turpentine instead of gas.

4. Marie Curie discovered radium and did lots of neat stuff with radioactivity, and some nifty experiments with X-Rays. They gave her some Nobel Prizes for that, and then she kinda died from cancer because of serious overexposure to the radioactive stuff. Which sucks.

6. Carbonation!! Which makes sense because there are carbon dioxide bubbles shooting out. When they tried it with diet soda that had gone flat, it didn't work very well at all.

9. Vinegar is a strong acid, and baking soda is a base. Acid-base reactions release lots of carbon dioxide, pretty explosively! (Kinda like in #6!!)

EXTRA CREDIT: If you add sodium (Na) to hydrogen chloride (HCl) that's in water, things swap around and you end up with sodium chloride (NaCl) in water and hydrogen gas (H2). The hydrogen got displaced by the sodium. Also, NaCl is just table salt, which is kinda cool.

1. What are the three key elements in creating nitroglycerin? Nitric acid, sulfuric acid, and glycerin. It’s three times the amount of sulfuric acid to the nitric acid, and then sloooowly add the glycerin a drop at a time!

And then you can roll it in sawdust so it’s a proper sort of explosive because, really, what’s the point of this if you’re not going to use it to blow stuff up?

3. Name three common modifications, such as additional ingredients, for a Molotov cocktail. Bits of soap flakes, sugar, and motor oil. Which'd be really gross if you mixed all three of those together, don't you think? Hm.

5. What are "foamed saccharides with protein inclusions" in everyday language? Peanut Brittle! Mmmm.

7. What is the main ingredient in dry ice? Frozen carbon dioxide. Though is that really an ingredient when that’s all it’s made out of? Aren’t, like, ingredient’s supposed to be part of the whole?

9. What makes a paper mache volcano go off? The addition of vinegar to the baking soda that’s been placed in the volcano. It goes off ‘cause baking soda is a base, and the vinegar is an acid and when mixed together they cause a lot carbon dioxide to be released that that’s why there’s the explosion.

Dean cocked his head to the side. "He hasn't tried dancing on top of your dresser with a rose in his mouth or anything?"
