"Welcome to your last class," Nathan said. "Today's the final. If you've been paying attention you should find it easy. You can leave once you're done, though I wouldn't advocate rushing through it just for that. If you have any questions, I'm here."

Leadership Final Exam

Essay Question:

Imagine you have just become the leader of whatever you want to be (i.e. a country, a company, a squadron, etc.) Your predecessor has left you with huge debts, a potential enemy attack, and as many people passionately hating you as there are people who support you. Using the skills from the class, how would you attempt to deal with these problems?

Turtle's answer to the essay question was a little staggering; it was clear that this was a girl who spent her spare time (what little of it she had) jotting down plans for exactly this sort of thing and enjoyed it. She incorporated a whole arsenal of her favorite techniques, including a potential budget plan to fix the debt, a campaign to get out there and polish up that unfortunate image, and an outline of potential networking contacts to try to make with a description of how each one would be beneficial in becoming more successful. There were scribbles of charts and graphs, and there would have been more, but Turtle knew she only had so much time. It made her sad because she really did love writing and planning all that stuff.

Even her her grammar kind of sucked.

Ender's essay was long, but pointed-- and geared towards making sure you fixed the problems first, so that the people knew they could trust you, and trust your decisions. To be kind in some places and firm in the others, weather criticism, and any number of the things he'd learned both in this class and in his own tenure back home.

He came out feeling roughly the opposite of what he'd felt doing the ethics exam: he felt hopeful.

It was a ridiculous thing to feel hopeful about, but he was going to take it anyway.

Since she didn't actually want to be leader of anything, Agnes imagined becoming Queen of Lancre -- assuming, of course, that the predecessor wasn't actually Verence II.

She had a fairly detailed and well-thought-out plan that began with the predecessor being publicly brought to justice, appropriately punished, and then later shown mercy. From there, it involved rebuilding the public trust, negotiating down the debts, strong leadership, and other things.

The only "flaw" in her plan, if it could be called that, is that she seemed to assume it would be possible to sit down to a personal chat with every single person in the country over the course of only a few days.

Ben's answer to the question stretched for pages and pages and pages.

And pages.

Not that he had spent a lot of time thinking how to fix his galazy's current leadership issues at all. Really.

Momoko tapped her pencil against her chin and pondered a moment, then wrote about becoming the leader of a squadron. First she would review her team to make sure that they were willing members, ready to work together for the common cause even if they didn't like her as the leader. It was important to make sure that you knew your team wasn't going to suddenly fragment in the middle of a battle! Then there was the assignment of an emergency defense team and creation of a strategy, in case the rumours of the impending attack were true and they were attacked while still trying to sort things out. And then she would set aside time to go over the the debts. It would be wonderful if she had some people on her team who were any good with money, too. Because then she could have a chief of money who would work on that problem so she could focus on leading the team in action. The PR they could work on as the team had down-time; they would do simple things like cleaning up neighborhoods and hosting tv shows and stuff.

Dor of course attempted a very intelligent response.

With lots of misspellings.

Meg couldn't help but snicker as she wrote out an essay that basically summarized what her mother was trying to do.

Alex's answer ~~handwavily~~ explained how he would deal with the problem, probably a bit naively.

Chad already felt bad about having forgotten to tell one of Teddy's teachers about his current condition, so he definitely made sure to come in before the leadership class, golden retriever pup following behind him.

"Mister Petrelli?"

Nathan looked up... and up. "Can I help you?"

"Um, Teddy's kind of a dog right now," Chad, who never really wasted words, got right to the point, gesturing at the tail-wagging golden retriever with him. The puppy looked very remorseful and sheepish about the whole timing issue.

"Of course he is," Nathan said. His tone made it not unlike realizing that of course it was raining when you really wanted to go out for a walk.

"Yeah, so...I don't know what you want to do about his final, but he kind of can't write or talk right now..."

"Tell him to ~~handwavily~~ complete the final and drop it off in my inbox when he's better," Nathan said.

"Cool," Chad nodded, skipping the whole bit about telling people that they could tell him directly because he was sick of saying it. He nodded to Teddy, who barked back. "Thanks, Mister Petrelli."

Again with the last time! For this class! After she pings!

I can't imagine where I got the final exam question from.

It makes me laugh because in the updated version of Meg's canon? Her mother is elected post-Bush.
