Introductory Superhuman Physics, Period 4 [12-16]

"This marks the end of our time together," Jean-Paul said. "I hope you have all learned something, or at least learned to think about how superpowers work. If you are from a reality where superpowers are merely hypothetical, well, congratulations, you have something to look strange on your transcript. Now all that is left is not to fail this class, and that is fairly simple. Your final assignment is to write an essay on a superpower--it can be one we have covered in this class, or another of your choosing--and the ramifications that superpower's existence has for the laws of physics as currently understood. Anyone who chooses a superpower that has no effect on physics will fail. You have the rest of the period. Begin."

Gavin thumbed through his notes, skimming them quickly in an effort to learn through osmosis.

John hopped over to his desk and had to tilt his head way back as he prepared himself and bunny-leaped up.

"John?" Ben guessed.

Ben was either smart or he listened to radio. John raised one bunny paw in greeting before rubbing it on his face. Stupid haircut itched.

Ben totally listened to the radio.

It didn't stop the gigglefit he was having, though.

Oh yes, Ben could laugh all he wanted. John made a note to short sheet the kid's bed first chance he got.

He hopped to the end of the desk, sniffing in Ben's direction, wondering if he possessed snacks. What? Priorities.

"Are you trying to eat my lucky pen?" Ben asked.

Offended, John huffed and lowered one ear. No, John was not trying to eat his pen, but he'd certainly gnaw on a pencil. The wood felt oddly good against his large teeth.

Ben looked at what else was on his desk. "The pencil, then?" he offered, pushing it towards the bunny.

He'd really prefer Cheetos, but yeah, okay. The bunny stretched and snatched up the pencil, proceeding to hold it upright with his paws to better work the wood with his teeth. This would keep him entertained for a while.

Momoko was trying some deep breathing techniques. Or maybe gasping for breath. This was her FIRST final at Fandom.

Gavin started writing his exam on invisibility since it was the first that popped into his head. The impact on physics seemed to be obvious enough. People were not meant to modify their body chemistry in a way that made them invisible. The molecules, electrons and protons were created in a way that allowed the person to be seen. If bodies were meant to be modified in that way, everyone would walk around invisibly.

Bored while others were writing, John gnawed on the pencil, trying to make a nice pattern.

You would think, with Francine's yaypony!11! issues, she'd go for flight, but then, you probably weren't in her Home Ec class this morning. Where there were MEASURING TAPES.

Thus, Francine wrote about the physics-defying properties of being able to shrink at will, and wondering where the rest of you went. Even though when it came to the kind of shrinking she'd prefer, Francine frankly didn't give a good crap where the rest of her went as long as it never came back.

And she didn't say "Maybe it's just magic" even once.

Ben wrote an incredibly detailed essay about the how-tos of wiping someone's memory, the effect it had on time and space, as well as the mental and ethical implications on the victim.

It was almost like he was planning on doing this to a large group of people in the near future.

Viki's essay on teleportation (really now, she couldn't be expected to think outside the box on this, could she?) was long, severely meandering, and once you sifted through all the ramble made several very good points about the pros and cons of it.

She should know, after all.

Somewhere in Katchoo's essay, there was the germ of a good idea about being able to disappear at will. The rudimentary germ. It was rather lost amid the rambling about how the laws of physics were kind of bitches about light refraction ("or some crap like that") and would rat out that there was actually solid mass there, and things like this were why the universe sucked.

Momoko decided to go with one that she was familiar with, but wasn't sure if she wanted flying or strength. In the end she chose her favourite: flying. Her essay discussed how a flying person would have to be able to defeat the forces of gravity and withstand atmospheric pressure, the problem of initial thrust and speed control. Breathing, turning with nothing to push against and maintaining altitude were hard to go into, but she did the best she could. She threw in a few odd theories like the possibility of the flyer being accustomed to a different location, a planet with heavier gravity, and the idea of altered physique - hollow bones or natural wings, but mainly stuck to the idea that flying humans existed (they did) and physics just had to deal with it, not explain it.

She actually enjoyed writing it.
