Library [10.12]

Karal and Altra arrived, opened the door, spent a moment staring in open mouthed shock, then turned around and left, heading for the stables.

They returned shortly, Karal with a pitchfork in hand.

He needed it just to clear a path to the desk.

There were thin silvery strands, slippery and bright, everywhere. It was falling from the ceiling in irregular showers, coiling on the bookshelves and coating the chairs.

As Karal scraped it aside, it clung to him, sticking to hands and hair and robes. "This," he muttered, "is worse than the music."

Altra didn't answer. For all that he was an avatar of a god, ancient in both years and wisdom, he was still a cat. Some things were biologically hardwired. Butt in the air, he crouched, then pounced, sending up a cloud of tinsel that whirled through the air, and coated them both liberally as it settled.

[certainly! I figured! have a good day!]

"Nothing much to tell. I missed something and it upset her and then she decided I wasn't worth her time. Nothing's permanent and such things last least of all."

He scratched at an ear.

"Work from home? Is everything all right?"

He shrugged.

"Lots of horrible things happen. At least this one didn't involve anyone being hurt."

He had an odd way of doing it, but he was being positive.

"And if there's ever anything I can do to help with your work, please let me know. Even if it's just bringing by tea and meals for you."

"From what I heard of government back home, it seems to be a common enough problem. Or perhaps just a symptom of order."

He took the cookie.

"And I like feeling useful."
