Ethics [Tuesday, December 9, 2nd period]

"Next week is your final exam," Anakin said, leaning against his desk. "So this week is your final chance to ask me any questions you might have been wondering this semester. You can ask me about ethical scenarios you or someone else might have encountered. You can ask me my favorite deadly sin. You can ask what makes me think I'm so qualified to teach this, anyway."

His lips pressed together. "Though I wouldn't recommend that final question. Ask whatever you like. I'll try to answer it honestly."

He glanced around the room. "Who wants to start?"

"I think you can't rush that sort of thing," Anakin replied, "and there are some things that just aren't meant to be shared. My wife knows me better than anyone, and there are still parts of my life that are mine alone."

"That's what I think too," Ella said, words coming in a rush. "I'd like to be able to talk about everything, someday, but ... it wasn't the time." She looked slightly sheepish. "I just broke up with someone over this last night."

"I'm sorry to hear that," Anakin said. "Sharing something important shouldn't feel forced."

"He wasn't forcing me," Ella assured him. "It was more that neither of us completely trusted the other. It wasn't meant to last, anyhow, but thank you."

"Oh, I didn't mean it that way," Anakin said quickly. "I meant that people try to pretend intimacy by dumping a secret onto their partner."

"Ohhhhh," Ella said, feeling silly to have misunderstood. "That would be stupid, certainly. I think some secrets are better kept secrets."

"Absolutely," Anakin said. "If I told everyone my business, no one would ever talk to me."

"Even your wife?" Ella was actually surprised.

A small smile played across Anakin's face. "Oh, she knows most of the details," he said. "No one else does." He shrugged. "I've spent most of my life fighting wars. There are stories I'm never going to share about how inhumane we can be to one another."
