Ethics [Tuesday, December 9, 2nd period]

"Next week is your final exam," Anakin said, leaning against his desk. "So this week is your final chance to ask me any questions you might have been wondering this semester. You can ask me about ethical scenarios you or someone else might have encountered. You can ask me my favorite deadly sin. You can ask what makes me think I'm so qualified to teach this, anyway."

His lips pressed together. "Though I wouldn't recommend that final question. Ask whatever you like. I'll try to answer it honestly."

He glanced around the room. "Who wants to start?"

"Why do you always shut down any line of questioning that doesn't agree with what you're saying?" Dōjima asked. "Isn't part of being a teacher to help us understand, rather than announcing that we're wrong and flouncing off in a huff?"

It was totally flouncing. Especially when he wore a cape.

Anakin visibly bristled.

"Because generally the answers that don't agree with what I'm saying have led straight to a path of pain and death," he said overdramatically. "Lust can be fun, but for me it led to a secret marriage, an unplanned pregnancy and a wife dead in childbirth. I'm trying to teach you to think, not just react negatively to whatever I have to say."

"So because it went wrong for you, rather than teaching us how to think rationally about things you'd prefer to just scare us off for life?" she asked, boggling at him. "I don't just mean the lust class or whatever. When we covered 'temperance', you shut down dissenting opinions pretty fast too."

"I think you vastly overestimate my effect on anyone," Anakin replied, "but my experience has been that trusting a teenager to behave rationally generally ends in disaster. I can provide scenarios here that show consequences before you go into the world, make a stupid mistake, and have to live with the result forever."

"Overestimate? Really? Kids can be impressionable, especially when faced with disapproval from someone who's supposed to be an authority figure," Dōjima replied, clearly not lumping herself in with the 'kids'. He'd made an impression on Romeo at least, which meant he was influencing people at least a bit.
